STransE: a novel embedding model of entities and relationships in knowledge bases
Paper · 2016 · Dat Quoc Nguyen, Kairit Sirts, Lizhen Qu et al.
Summary
Knowledge bases such as WordNet or Freebase store facts as (head, relation, tail) triples, but they are far from complete. Link prediction tries to guess which missing triples are true. The authors propose STransE, an embedding model that merges two earlier simple approaches: the Structured Embedding (SE) model and TransE. Entities are low-dimensional vectors. Each relation gets two separate matrices that map the head and the tail into a relation-specific space, plus a translation vector that should connect the projected head to the projected tail. Because heads and tails are projected differently, the model can emphasise, dampen or even invert different attributes depending on an entity's role. Training minimises a margin-based ranking loss over corrupted triples with SGD, starting from TransE vectors and identity matrices. On the WN18 and FB15k benchmarks, STransE beats the embedding models it builds on and other methods that use neither relation paths nor external text. Its simplicity makes it a strong baseline and a foundation for richer extensions.
Key points
- The score function is ‖W_r,1·h + r − W_r,2·t‖. The l1 norm was chosen on validation data for both datasets, with k = 50 for WN18 and k = 100 for FB15k. Training ran SGD for 2,000 epochs with "Bernoulli" negative sampling.
- Datasets: WN18 has 40,943 entities and 18 relations. FB15k has 14,951 entities and 1,345 relations, with 483,142 training triples.
- Filtered results: on WN18, mean rank is 206 and Hits@10 is 93.4%. On FB15k, mean rank is 69 and Hits@10 is 79.7%, the best Hits@10 among models without path or text information.
- In the FB15k per-category analysis, STransE reaches about 81.6% Hits@10 on many-to-many relations and beats TransD on 1-M and M-1. It is weaker than TransD on the rare 1-1 relations.
- Models using relation paths (R TransE, PTransE) or the external ClueWeb-12 corpus (Node+LinkFeat) still score higher. Adding path information is planned as future work.
