DBpedia – A Large-scale, Multilingual Knowledge Base Extracted from Wikipedia

Summary

Wikipedia contains a great deal of structured data: infoboxes, categories, geocoordinates, interlanguage links. However, it can only be searched by text, so formulating complex queries against it is nearly impossible. The authors describe the community project DBpedia. It converts this data into a large multilingual knowledge base in RDF format and publishes it openly as Linked Data. The technical foundation of the project is the extraction framework. Pages from dumps or obtained via the MediaWiki API are parsed into an abstract syntax tree. A set of extractors then generates RDF triples from it. The extractors include mapping-based infobox extractors, "raw" infobox extractors, feature-specific extractors, and statistical extractors for NLP. The key idea is a shared ontology. Volunteers from different countries manually map infobox templates in different languages to it, so types and properties become consistent. In addition to regular releases, there is DBpedia Live, which tracks edits to Wikipedia almost immediately. As a result, DBpedia has become one of the central hubs of the LOD cloud. It is widely used for data integration and for named entity recognition and disambiguation.

Key points

  • Data have been extracted from 111 language editions of Wikipedia. The English version contains over 400 million facts about 3.7 million entities. The remaining 110 editions together provide 1.46 billion facts and about 10 million additional entities.
  • The shared DBpedia ontology has 320 classes and 1,650 properties. Infobox mappings for 27 languages are created by the community through the DBpedia Mappings Wiki; this work began in 2010.
  • The "raw" infobox extractor (namespace dbp) determines value types heuristically. Because of this, the same property may have different types across different entities. Mapping-based extraction (namespace dbo) yields more consistent typed data.
  • DBpedia contains 27 million RDF links to more than 30 external sources, and hundreds of other datasets link to it in turn. SPARQL access is available for 14 language versions through a network of local DBpedia chapters.
  • The project has been developing since 2006. Plans include closer cooperation with Wikidata, automatic quality checks of Wikipedia data, and broader use of DBpedia as background knowledge in NLP, in particular for NER and entity disambiguation.
