Cross-layer Attention Sharing for Pre-trained Large Language Models

Paper · 2026 · Yongyu Mu, Yuzhang Wu, Yuchun Fan et al.

Summary

Earlier work on making LLM attention more efficient mostly targets redundancy inside a layer, for example by compressing the KV cache or grouping heads. This paper asks whether every layer actually needs to compute its own attention. A similarity analysis across several LLMs shows that most layers, especially neighbouring ones, produce very similar attention patterns. Simply reusing an earlier layer's weights fails for two reasons. Heads have no fixed correspondence across layers, so they must be matched first. Shallow layers also break down under even small deviations.

The authors propose LiSA (Learnable Sharing Attention), a lightweight replacement for self-attention that can be added to already-trained models. It has two parts:

  • small feed-forward networks that match heads between adjacent layers;
  • low-rank Q/K matrices that model the remaining layer-to-layer differences.

Only a small fraction of parameters is trained. Across 13 benchmarks, LiSA keeps accuracy and perplexity close to the original models while removing most per-layer attention computation. This makes it a practical, cheap way to speed up existing LLMs.

Key points

  • Applying LiSA to 53–84% of layers requires training only 0.46–1.64% of parameters. It shrinks the Q and K matrices about 6× and raises peak throughput by 19.5% (LLaMA3-8B), 32.3% (LLaMA2-7B) and 40.1% (LLaMA2-13B).
  • In an ablation on LLaMA3-8B with 1B training tokens, naive direct sharing collapses (MMLU 0.00, GSM8K 2.65). Using both LiSA modules recovers much of the performance (MMLU 56.78, GSM8K 26.84), though not all of it (original: 65.24 and 51.71).
  • After instruction tuning on Alpaca, LiSA models slightly outperform LLaMA3-8B in GPT-4-judged win rates. Changing the number of few-shot examples does not reduce LiSA's advantage.
  • In pre-training from scratch (12-layer, 164M-parameter LLaMA-like model, 10B tokens), sharing attention across two-thirds of the layers caused no loss.
