Granite Code Models: A Family of Open Foundation Models for Code Intelligence

Paper · 2024 · Mayank Mishra, Matt Stallone, Gaoyuan Zhang et al.

Summary

IBM Research addresses a gap in open code LLMs for enterprise use. Large general-purpose models are costly to run. Smaller code models tend to do well at generation but weaker at repair and explanation. Many open models also have unclear data provenance or restrictive licenses. The authors built Granite Code, a family of decoder-only models with 3B, 8B, 20B and 34B parameters, each available as a Base and an Instruct version.

Pretraining has two stages. First, the models see 3–4T tokens of permissively licensed code covering 116 programming languages, cleaned through heuristic filters, deduplication, HAP filtering and PII redaction. Second, they train on 500B tokens mixing high-quality code and natural language to strengthen reasoning. The Instruct models are then tuned on commit data, instruction data, math data and synthetic code data.

Across HumanEvalPack, MBPP(+), RepoBench, ReCode, BFCL and math benchmarks, Granite often matches or beats open models up to twice its size. Every model ships under Apache 2.0, which makes them a transparent, commercially usable foundation.

Key points

  • Code sources were Github Code Clean, StarCoderdata and extra GitHub repositories and issues, keeping only permissively licensed files. Deduplication used exact SHA256 hashing followed by MinHash/LSH fuzzy matching at a Jaccard threshold of 0.7. PII was masked with StarPII.
  • The Instruct models were tuned on a filtered CommitPack, OASST, HelpSteer, MathInstruct, MetaMathQA and synthetic code instruction sets.
  • On HumanEvalPack, Granite-8B-Code-Base averages 33.2% against 21.3% for CodeGemma-8B, despite training on fewer tokens (4.5T vs 7.5T). It also beats Llama-3-8B by about 12 points on GSM8K and about 6 points on MATH.
  • On BFCL, function-calling accuracy grows with model size, from 25.65% at 3B to 57.12% at 34B. Instruction tuning adds 17.88 points to the 8B model.
  • On ReCode robustness, Granite-34B-Code-Base outperforms CodeLlama-34B in all four perturbation categories. Granite-8B-Code-Base, however, trails CodeGemma-7B.
