M³-VQA: A Benchmark for Multimodal, Multi-Entity, Multi-Hop Visual Question Answering
Paper · 2026 · Jiatong Ma, Longteng Guo, Yuchen Liu et al.
Summary
Most knowledge-based VQA benchmarks test coarse categories or one main entity and need only one or two reasoning steps. They therefore say little about how multimodal large language models (MLLMs) handle scenes with several fine-grained entities whose facts must be combined. M$^3$-VQA addresses this gap. Each question involves multiple named entities, drawn from both the image and the question text, such as people, brands, vehicles, food, landmarks and animal species. Answering requires multi-hop reasoning over several documents, in one of two patterns:
- parallel: entities are resolved independently and the results are aggregated;
- sequential: each hop feeds the next.
Entities are linked to Wikidata and Wikipedia. Every answer comes with a traceable evidence chain, and a curated multimodal knowledge base supports retrieval experiments. The authors tested 16 MLLMs in three conditions: no external knowledge, gold evidence, and retrieval-augmented input. Without knowledge, models score poorly. Supplying exact evidence helps substantially, and agentic retrieval with explicit planning outperforms heuristic retrieval. The benchmark makes knowledge acquisition and structured reasoning measurable, which is useful for evaluating retrieval-augmented multimodal systems.
Key points
- Images come from several sources:
- fine-grained labeled datasets: CelebTo, FGVD, FlickrLogos-47, LogosInTheWild, Menu-match, Oktoberfest, UEC-FoodPix and UNIMIB2016;
- EVQA and InfoSeek, whose single-hop questions were extended to multi-hop;
- images manually collected through web search.
- Entity labels were mapped to Wikidata IDs by string matching, with human checks for ambiguous cases. Parallel questions were built from Wikidata triples using annotator-written templates and SPARQL-extracted answers.
- Difficulty is measured along two axes: entity complexity (the number of visual plus textual entities) and hop complexity (the number of nodes in the evidence chain).
- Without external knowledge, the best of the 16 MLLMs reaches only 32.6% accuracy. Accuracy rises steadily as more of the gold evidence chain is revealed, and sequential tasks benefit most.
- Stated limitations: the data is English-only and draws its knowledge from Wikipedia, and chain-of-thought prompting was not evaluated. Code and data are released at github.com/CASIA-IVA-Lab/M3VQA.
