Machine Translation for Low-Resource Languages through Monolingual Data and LLM: A Case Study of English-to-Basque

Paper · 2026 · Nam Luu, Aitor Soroa, German Rigau et al.

Summary

The paper examines whether an English-to-Basque machine translation system can be built without any genuine parallel data, using only Basque monolingual text and LLMs. It exploits an asymmetry: current LLMs translate Basque into English reasonably well but struggle the other way. The authors sampled Basque documents from latxa-corpus-v1.1 and translated them into English with Llama-3.1-70B-Instruct. This produced a synthetic document-level parallel corpus, released as HiTZ/EusParallel. They removed chatbot-style artifacts and filtered misaligned pairs with a word-count heuristic based on regression. They then trained Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct in two stages:

  • Supervised fine-tuning (SFT).
  • Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). The original Basque text served as the preferred output, and the SFT model's own translation as the rejected one.

Evaluation combined automatic metrics with a manual error analysis. SFT delivered most of the improvement. The fine-tuned 8B model surpassed the 70B Llama and was competitive with Basque-specialized LLMs such as Latxa-70B. DPO added little. The approach matters for languages that lack a strong dedicated LLM.

Key points

  • Synthetic corpus: 213,056 back-translated documents, each capped at 4,096 tokens, drawn from latxa-corpus-v1.1 and released as HiTZ/EusParallel.
  • Filtering:
    • Five extreme outliers were dropped first.
    • A regression through the origin gave a ≈ 0.897 and R² = 0.946, showing roughly a 1:1 word ratio between English and Basque.
    • Pairs were kept if the English-to-Basque word ratio fell between 2/3 and 3/2.
    • For pairs where either side had 100 words or fewer, the accepted range was widened to 0.5–2.
  • Training pipeline: SFT of Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, followed by DPO on triplets of the form (English source, original Basque, SFT hypothesis).
  • Results:
    • SFT produced the largest gains, and scores rose steadily as more training data was used.
    • DPO yielded only marginal or no improvement.
    • A manual error analysis of 13 examples agreed with the automatic metrics.
  • Limitations:
    • Some English passages were left untranslated, likely because the Basque source corpus contained some English text.
    • The test sets (post-edited back-translations and 1,000 documents selected by a quality-estimation model) share a domain with the training material, which consists largely of news and Wikipedia content.
    • Hyperparameter exploration was limited.
