Intelligent Go-Explore: Standing on the Shoulders of Giant Foundation Models
Paper · 2024 · Cong Lu, Shengran Hu and Jeff Clune
Summary
Go-Explore algorithms tackle hard-exploration problems by keeping an archive of discovered states, going back to promising ones and exploring further from there. The approach achieved superhuman results on Atari games and robotic control, but each stage depends on hand-tuned, domain-specific heuristics. Lu, Hu and Clune propose Intelligent Go-Explore (IGE), which delegates three decisions to large pretrained foundation models (LLMs and multimodal models) prompted with a short description of the environment: which archived state to revisit, which actions to take from it, and whether a newly reached state is worth archiving. Because the models carry an internalized sense of what humans find interesting, the agent can notice and exploit unexpected useful discoveries without rules specified in advance. On language- and vision-based search tasks (Game of 24, BabyAI, TextWorld), IGE beats classic RL and graph-search baselines and solves problems where FM agents such as Reflexion fail. The work matters because it extends Go-Explore to almost any problem that fits in a model's context. It also gives FM agents a structured way to explore over long horizons without additional training.
Key points
- On Game of 24, IGE reaches a 100% success rate and gets there 70.8% faster than classic graph search.
- Using Claude Sonnet 3.5 as the underlying model, IGE lifts the Game of 24 success rate from 24% (naive FM action selection) to 86%. The authors take this as evidence that IGE's gains do not depend heavily on the strength of the base model.
- In BabyAI, IGE lets standard foundation models succeed zero-shot from visual observations.
- On TextWorld Coin Collector, IGE is the only tested method that finds long-horizon optimal paths; Reflexion fails on this task.
- Like the original Go-Explore, IGE assumes the agent can restore earlier states through a simulator reset. The code is open-sourced at github.com/conglu1997/intelligent-go-explore.
