CMM-Math: A Chinese Multimodal Math Dataset To Evaluate and Enhance the Mathematics Reasoning of Large Multimodal Models
Paper · 2024 · Wentao Liu, Qianjun Pan, Yi Zhang et al.
Summary
Most multimodal math benchmarks for large multimodal models (LMMs), such as MATHVISTA and MATH-V, are English-only and are built for evaluation rather than training. The authors address this gap with CMM-Math, a Chinese multimodal mathematics resource that has both a benchmark split and a training split. They collected more than 10,000 real Chinese exam papers covering grades 1 through 12. Using the Mathpix API, they converted the PDFs to markdown, then cleaned and annotated the material. The problem types include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, yes-no and open analysis tasks, and images can appear in both questions and answer options. Tests of leading open- and closed-source LMMs show that the benchmark remains hard, especially at the upper grade levels. The authors also propose Math-LMM, which accepts interleaved text and multiple images. It is trained in three stages: foundational pre-training for visual alignment, foundational fine-tuning, and mathematical fine-tuning. Math-LMM generally beats open-source competitors on CMM-Math, MATHVISTA and MATH-V. The work matters because it supplies non-English data for training and evaluating visual math reasoning.
Key points
- Dataset scale: CMM-Math contains 28,069 problems, 15,213 images and 23,825 detailed solutions, covering 12 grade levels and 13 subjects.
- Images: 9,490 images appear in questions and 5,723 in answers or options.
- Results on CMM-Math:
- Math-LMM (72B) reaches the highest accuracy among open-source models (48.57), ahead of Qwen2-VL-Instruct with 3-shot prompting (46.29).
- Math-LMM is strongest on the hardest levels, 10–12.
- On a GPT-4o-judged solution quality score (1–10), Qwen2-VL-Instruct leads with 5.26. The authors attribute Math-LMM's weaker score here to limited training data.
- Results on MATHVISTA: Math-LMM scores 36.3 (72B) and 34.9 (7B), the top two results among open-source systems. On numeric commonsense questions it outperforms Multimodal Bard and GPT-4V.
- Results on MATH-V: the 72B version is the best open-source model, and the 7B version leads among models of similar size. Data, code and weights are planned for release via GitHub (ECNU-ICALK/EduChat-Math).
