Dynamic Prefix-Tuning for Generative Template-based Event Extraction
Paper · 2022 · Xiao Liu, Heyan Huang, Ge Shi et al.
Summary
Recent work treats event extraction as text generation: a pretrained encoder-decoder is prompted with a template and fills in triggers and arguments. These systems still trail classification-based extractors for two reasons. Their prompts are handwritten and never optimized, and each pass sees only the description of the single event type being processed, ignoring other types that may occur in the same text.
The authors propose GTEE-DynPref. Like earlier generative approaches, it extracts events one type at a time with BART and reuses argument templates from Li et al. (2021). The handwritten type cue is replaced by trainable prefix vectors for each event type. These per-type prefixes are then merged, conditioned on the input text, into one prefix tailored to that context. An irrelevance classifier first discards sentences that contain no events.
On ACE 2005, the model performs on par with the classification-based leader OneIE. On ERE, it reports the best results. It also transfers well to unseen event types. This suggests generation-based extraction can be competitive while staying easy to extend.
Key points
-
Datasets are ACE05-E, ACE05-E+ and ERE-EN. ERE templates come from the RAMS AIDA and KAIROS ontologies.
-
With the trained irrelevance classifier, GTEE-DynPref reaches the following F1 scores:
Dataset Trg-C F1 Arg-C F1 ACE05-E 72.6 55.8 ACE05-E+ 74.3 54.7 ERE-EN 66.9 55.1 -
Ablation shows that dynamic prefixes beat static per-type prefixes (GTEE-StaPref) across the three datasets:
- Trg-C F1 rises by 0.8, 0.6 and 0.5 points.
- Arg-C F1 rises by 1.5, 0.5 and 0.8 points.
-
The irrelevance classifier reaches 95.4%, 93.5% and 94.2% accuracy. Without it, F1 drops by more than ten points.
-
The chosen hyperparameters are a prefix length of 80 and an embedding dimension D0 of 512.
