Bibliography of Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, and Omotic Linguistics XXVII: 2023

Summary

This is not an experimental study but an annual reference list: the 27th instalment of a bibliography that tracks linguistic publications on the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia (and neighbouring Eritrea), covering work that appeared in 2023. The compilers gathered journal articles, handbook chapters, monographs and conference papers and sorted them into four blocks: general and areal studies, Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, and Omotic. Two small sections follow, one listing reviews of older books and one adding a 2022 item missed last time. Within each block, entries are alphabetical. Every co-author also gets a short "see" pointer to the main entry. A large share of the 2023 output comes from The Oxford Handbook of Ethiopian Languages, which has chapters on individual languages and on cross-cutting topics such as scripts, media, policy and endangerment. The list also captures a small but growing computational strand: speech recognition, spoken language identification, and NLP surveys. Its value is practical. Researchers working on low-resource Ethiopian languages get a curated, searchable entry point to one year of scholarship.

Key points

  • The list appears in Aethiopica 27, pp. 272–284; the PDF header gives the year as 2024. Its sections are: general, Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, Omotic, Reviews of Earlier Publications, and Addenda 2022.
  • The Oxford Handbook of Ethiopian Languages (eds. Ronny Meyer, Bedilu Wakjira, Zelealem Leyew; OUP 2023) dominates the year. It has chapters on Geez, Tigrinya, Kistane, Kambaata, Gawwada, Awngi, Wolaytta, Kafa, Hamar, Sheko, Yemsa, Ethiopian Sign Language and others.
  • The NLP and speech entries include:
    • Atnafu Lambebo Tonja et al., a survey of NLP for Ethiopian languages (RAIL 2023 workshop, ACL).
    • Solomon Teferra Abate, Martha Yifiru Tachbelie and Tanja Schultz, a study applying deep neural networks to build a shared acoustic model across four languages of Ethiopia.
    • Amlakie Aschale Alemu et al., audio-based identification of Ethio-Semitic languages using an RNN.
  • Several lexical and corpus resources are listed: Daniel Aberra's frequency dictionary of written Amharic with a spoken supplement, and a corpus-based study of gender variation across Oromo dialects.
  • The Reviews section covers three earlier grammars: Classical Ethiopic (Geʿez), Ezha (Gurage) and Gawwada.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. Each co-author name is listed separately as a stub that only redirects to the canonical first-author entry, so a lookup by any contributor still lands on the item. — For Mova (world): Alias nodes that point to one canonical entity, rather than duplicating it, would keep the knowledge graph free of duplicate people while still resolving any surface name.
  • I2. The list mixes Ethiopian names (given name plus father's name, never inverted) with inverted Western surnames, and files each by its own culture's convention. — For Mova (tokens): Name handling in the tagger and lemmatizer could store a per-name ordering convention, so sorting or matching personal names does not assume "Surname, Given" everywhere.
  • I3. When a title hides the relevant content, the compilers add a brief bracketed note, such as an African typology paper that also covers the Ethiopian Language Area. — For Mova (learn): Attaching short scope notes to training and evaluation documents would explain why a text was included, making corpus selection itself explainable.
  • I4. Items missed in the previous edition go into an explicit Addenda section instead of silently rewriting the earlier edition. — For Mova (learn): Silver datasets could be versioned with append-only addenda, so later evaluations stay comparable to earlier ones while omissions still get fixed.
  • I5. Reviews of older works sit apart from new primary publications, which separates first-order contributions from commentary on them. — For Mova (frames): Marking text that evaluates another text as a distinct second-order speech act would help prag keep reported judgments apart from the speaker's own claims.
