Bibliography of Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, and Omotic Linguistics XXVI: 2022
Summary
This is the 26th yearly instalment of a running bibliography from Aethiopica. It lists linguistic publications from 2022 on the Afro-Asiatic languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It reports no experiment, so there is no data, method or metric. The compilers (Universität Hamburg and HSE University) gathered articles, books, conference papers and online media. They sorted them into four groups:
- cross-family work,
- Ethiopian Semitic,
- Cushitic,
- Omotic.
A final section pairs earlier books with the reviews they received in 2022. Most entries are descriptive or historical studies, covering grammar, valency and causative alternations, ideophones, noun phrases, pragmatics, orthography and epigraphy. A small group is computational, chiefly on Amharic–English machine translation and on corpus tooling for Saho and Afar. The value of the list is that it maps where research effort went in one year. It helps researchers find resources on under-documented languages, some of which appear in only a few venues.
Key points
- The list has five parts: general, Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, Omotic, and reviews of earlier publications. In the extracted PDF the header reads Aethiopica 26 (2023), pp. 226–231.
- Two computational MT works on Amharic appeared in 2022:
- an enlarged Amharic–English parallel corpus at LREC 2022 (pp. 6644–6653);
- offline corpus augmentation for English–Amharic MT at ICICT 2022.
- Two Cushitic tooling items are included: a Saho Corpus paper on semi-automating conjugation of class I verbs, and a mobile metadata system supporting Afar data collection.
- Major reference works are listed:
- Butts' summary of Classical Ethiopic (Gǝʿǝz) morphology;
- Endalew Assefa's descriptive grammar of Ezha (Gurage);
- Tosco's Gawwada dictionary;
- trilingual vocabularies of Chara and Nayi.
- Transcribed language films for Arbore, Basketo, Chara (Tsara) and Nayi are listed as an online resource (Studies in Ethiopian Languages 11). Five earlier books are paired with their 2022 reviews, and some books have up to three reviews.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Every co-author who is not listed first gets a short pointer entry leading to the main record. This means any name variant reaches the same item without duplicating it. — For Mova (world): Store secondary names of an entity as alias nodes that point to one canonical node, so lookups through any variant land in the same knowledge-graph record.
- I2. When a title hides why an item matters, the compilers add a brief bracketed note, for example that a typology article covers Ethiopian Afro-Asiatic languages. — For Mova (learn): Attach a short scope note to each training or eval dataset explaining why it is relevant. Negative controls and data selection then stay auditable.
- I3. Titles in Ethiopic script appear three ways: in the original script, in scholarly transliteration, and in an English gloss. A reader can verify the source and still understand it. — For Mova (back): When translating through the meta-world, emit the source form, a normalized form and a gloss together, so each output step can be explained and checked.
- I4. Classification uses family-level buckets plus a separate "general" bucket for cross-cutting work. Items are not forced into a single family. — For Mova (world): Give the ontology an explicit cross-category node for things spanning several classes, instead of picking one class arbitrarily and losing information.
- I5. Reviews are filed under the work they assess, so several independent judgments of one book sit side by side. — For Mova (learn): Group several witness parsers' outputs under the same sentence record, so agreement and disagreement are visible at a glance when building silver data.
