E-EVAL: A Comprehensive Chinese K-12 Education Evaluation Benchmark for Large Language Models

Paper · 2024 · Jinchang Hou, Chang Ao, Haihong Wu et al.

Summary

LLMs are increasingly used in Chinese school education, but before this work no benchmark targeted the Chinese K-12 setting as a whole. Existing Chinese suites such as C-EVAL, CMMLU and AGIEval focus on advanced, professional or national-exam content and largely ignore primary school. E-EVAL fills this gap. It is a multiple-choice benchmark covering primary, middle and high school across 23 subject–level combinations, grouped into arts and science. To reduce training-data contamination, the authors avoided Gaokao and Zhongkao items. Instead, they gathered regional homework, practice sets and mock exams from PDF and Word files. Science formulas were converted to LaTeX by hand, every item went through three rounds of manual checking, and answer positions were rebalanced. Many English- and Chinese-dominant LLMs were tested. Chinese-dominant models came out ahead, with several outscoring GPT-4, but mathematics stayed weak for almost all systems. Surprisingly, Chinese models often did no better on primary-level questions than on middle-school ones. This suggests that mastering advanced material does not guarantee command of basic knowledge. The benchmark thus gives a practical tool for tracking LLM progress in education.

Key points

  • The benchmark has 4,351 four-option questions: 537 primary (5 subjects), 1,589 middle (9) and 2,225 high school (9). Of these, 2,699 are arts items (13 subjects) and 1,652 are science items (10 subjects).
  • The splits are dev 115, validation 424 and test 3,812. Five worked examples with explanations per subject support Few-shot evaluation.
  • Data come from zxxk.com and zujuan.xkw.com. Correct answers are spread roughly evenly across the options (A 24.3%, B 26.1%, C 25.8%, D 23.8%).
  • Few-shot prompting helps mostly in liberal arts. CoT lowers results overall but helps in hard science subjects like mathematics.
  • Education-specialized LLMs still trail general models, and open-source models are close behind closed ones. The resource is released on GitHub (AI-EDU-LAB/E-EVAL), Hugging Face and eevalbenchmark.com.
