Summary
Reinforcement learning has strengthened LLM reasoning, but most open replications apply RL to base models. It is still unclear how to efficiently improve long Chain-of-Thought models that have already been through SFT. Skywork-OR1 offers a scalable RL recipe for such models. It starts from the DeepSeek-R1-Distill series and trains on math and code problems from open sources, filtered heavily by difficulty and quality. The training pipeline, called MAGIC, combines several elements:
- staged growth of context length
- high-temperature sampling
- adaptive entropy control
- no KL penalty
Ablations test each component. A dedicated study of entropy collapse shows that when the policy converges too early, test accuracy suffers. On-policy updates help slow this collapse. Average accuracy across AIME24, AIME25 and LiveCodeBench rises by about 15 points for the 32B model and 14 points for the 7B model. Skywork-OR1-32B outperforms DeepSeek-R1 and Qwen3-32B on AIME. The work matters because weights, code and data are all openly released, enabling reproducible RL research on long-CoT models.
Key points
- The three released models are Skywork-OR1-32B, Skywork-OR1-7B and Skywork-OR1-Math-7B. They are built on DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-32B/7B, and the dataset is published as Skywork-OR1-RL-Data.
- Skywork-OR1-32B scores 82.2 on AIME24, 73.3 on AIME25 and 63.0 on LiveCodeBench (2024-08–2025-02). Its three-benchmark average climbs from 57.8% to 72.8%.
- Skywork-OR1-7B reaches 70.2 on AIME24, 54.6 on AIME25 and 47.6 on LiveCodeBench, raising its average from 43.6% to 57.5%. Skywork-OR1-Math-7B scores 69.8, 52.3 and 43.6 on the same benchmarks.
- Training settings: learning rate 1e-6, clip ratio 0.2, target entropy 0.2, temperature 1.0 and rejection sampling. Context grows across stages, for example 16K→24K for the 32B model and 16K→32K for the 7B model.
- Off-policy updates, whether from more mini-batches or data reuse, speed up entropy collapse and hurt results. Larger batch or group sizes barely change entropy dynamics. Evaluation uses avg@32 for AIME and avg@4 for LiveCodeBench, with outputs capped at 32,768 tokens.
