Chinese SimpleQA: A Chinese Factuality Evaluation for Large Language Models
Paper · 2024 · Yancheng He, Shilong Li, Jiaheng Liu et al.
Summary
Hallucination remains a major weakness of large language models. Factuality is hard to measure when models produce long answers that mix many claims. OpenAI's SimpleQA addressed this with short fact-seeking questions, but it covers only English. Chinese SimpleQA is a Chinese counterpart: 3,000 short questions, each with a single, time-invariant reference answer. The answers can be graded automatically with an LLM judge through the OpenAI API.
The authors built the questions in several stages:
- They mined knowledge-rich texts such as Wikipedia and had gpt-4o-0806 draft question–answer pairs.
- An LLM screened the drafts against fixed criteria, and a retrieval step built on LlamaIndex, Google and Bing checked the answers.
- Questions that strong models all solved were removed.
- Two human annotators checked every remaining item.
The benchmark proves hard. Only o1-preview and Doubao-pro-32k reach roughly 60% correct. Models tuned for Chinese rival or beat GPT and o1 models on Chinese cultural topics. This makes the benchmark a useful tool for diagnosing factual knowledge in Chinese, beyond what English-centric tests reveal.
Key points
- Coverage: 3,000 questions across 6 major topics (e.g., "Chinese Culture", "Natural Science", "Society") and 99 subtopics. Every answer must be unique, objective, unchanging, and answerable by 31 December 2023.
- Quality control:
- A question is dropped if four strong reference models all answer it correctly.
- Two independent annotators review each item, and each must cite at least two supporting URLs from authoritative sources such as Wikipedia or Baidu Baike.
- Top scores: o1-preview gets 63.8% correct and Doubao-pro-32k gets 61.9%. Larger models in the Qwen2.5, InternLM and Yi-1.5 families score higher and are also better calibrated.
- Effect of RAG: Retrieval sharply narrows differences between models. The gap between GPT-4o and Qwen2.5-3B falls from 42.4% to 9.3%.
- Further findings:
- Alignment and post-training tend to lower factuality, an "alignment tax".
- Model rankings differ from those on English SimpleQA; Doubao-pro-32k and GLM-4-Plus come close to o1-preview.
