If an LLM Were a Character, Would It Know Its Own Story? Evaluating Lifelong Learning in LLMs
Paper · 2026 · Siqi Fan, Xiusheng Huang, Yiqun Yao et al.
Summary
LLMs are stateless by nature, yet in long multi-agent conversations they tend to settle into a stable persona. The authors treat this as a form of lifelong learning and ask whether it can be measured objectively. Existing role-play and dialogue benchmarks mostly rely on static or open-ended setups, so they introduce LifeState-Bench. It is built on episodic theatrical scripts: Hamlet, with character names anonymized, and a set of new scripts generated by Claude 3.5 Sonnet that models cannot have seen in pretraining. After each episode, a model playing a character answers fact-based questions on three dimensions: self-awareness, episodic memory retrieval, and relationship shifts. Answers are graded by an LLM judge with human support.
The study compares two ways of supplying history:
- Non-parametric: concatenating full episodes or their summaries.
- Parametric: knowledge editing and LoRA fine-tuning.
Context-based methods consistently beat parameter-updating ones. Still, every model degrades as episodes accumulate, which reveals catastrophic forgetting. The benchmark therefore offers a diagnostic for building more stateful, memory-capable agents.
Key points
- Two datasets: LifeState-Bench-Hamlet has about 1.3K samples, averaging 66.1 turns and 6.6 agents. LifeState-Bench-Synth has 202 samples, averaging 28.9 turns and 7 agents.
- Models tested: Llama3.1-8B, GPT-4-turbo and DeepSeek R1.
- Memory methods compared: direct concatenation, summary concatenation, knowledge editing (GRACE) and LoRA-Tune. The best reported overall accuracy is 75.6%, with a factual-memory score of 75.5%.
- Relationship-shift questions are the hardest. Summary concatenation does especially poorly on them, and knowledge editing shows the steepest decline across episodes.
- Some models still predicted future Hamlet plot points despite the anonymization. The authors present this leakage as a deliberate test of whether models balance prior knowledge against new information.
