Prompting and Evaluating Large Language Models for Proactive Dialogues: Clarification, Target-guided, and Non-collaboration
Paper · 2023 · Yang Deng, Lizi Liao, Liang Chen et al.
Summary
Chat assistants built on large language models, such as ChatGPT, respond fluently but mostly react to the user. They rarely ask for clarification when a request is ambiguous, and they seldom steer or resist a conversation. Deng et al. test whether such systems can handle proactive dialogue in three settings:
- clarification in information-seeking dialogue (e.g., Abg-CoQA),
- target-guided open-domain dialogue,
- non-collaborative negotiation (CraigslistBargain).
They compare three prompting schemes. Standard prompting asks only for a reply. Proactive prompting has the model choose a dialogue act or strategy from a supplied list. Their new Proactive Chain-of-Thought (ProCoT) has the model first reason explicitly about the dialogue state and goal, then pick an action, then write the response. ChatGPT and Vicuna are evaluated with these prompts and compared against fine-tuned SOTA dialogue models.
ProCoT sharply improves clarification-question asking and produces smoother topic transitions toward targets. Negotiation remains weak, because the models concede rather than plan strategically. The study is an early systematic benchmark of LLM proactivity and identifies strategy learning as the main open problem.
Key points
-
Formulations. Standard prompting models p(r|D, C). Proactive prompting models p(a, r|D, C, A), adding a set of candidate acts A. ProCoT inserts a descriptive reasoning/planning step before the action is chosen.
-
Clarification and target-guided findings. Under standard prompting, the LLMs almost never ask clarifying questions; ProCoT largely fixes this, though results in domain-specific applications stay unsatisfactory. In target-guided dialogue, the models reach the target but switch topics abruptly, and ProCoT makes the transitions smoother.
-
Negotiation metric. Negotiation success is measured with the sale-to-list ratio: (listed price − bargain price) / (listed price − buyer target price).
-
Negotiation errors. Dialogue-act heatmaps show typical ChatGPT mistakes:
- opening with a price instead of a greeting;
- accepting offers when it should counter;
- leaning on hedging, gratitude, or concessions.
Conditioning on reference strategies gives better deals, which points to strategy planning as the bottleneck.
-
Setup and limitations.
- Models: ChatGPT via the OpenAI API (about $120 in total) and Vicuna 13B on NVIDIA DGX-1 V100 32G.
- Release: prompts and code are announced at github.com/dengyang17/LLM-Proactive.
- Limitations noted by the authors: sensitivity to prompt choice, no interactive user simulation, and no tests of larger models such as GPT-4.
