Seed-Prover 1.5: Mastering Undergraduate-Level Theorem Proving via Learning from Experience
Paper · 2025 · Jiangjie Chen, Wenxiang Chen, Jiacheng Du et al.
Summary
Seed-Prover 1.5 (ByteDance Seed AI4Math) asks whether formal theorem proving in Lean can match the progress of natural-language LLM proving without large compute costs. The authors argue that Lean's verifiable feedback makes it a good environment for an agent that learns from its own experience. Starting from Seed-Prover 1.0, they fine-tune on synthetic tool-use data. They then run large-scale agentic RL on public datasets and in-house formalized textbooks, including Graduate Texts in Mathematics. The prover works lemma by lemma rather than tactic by tactic or whole proof at once. It uses Lean verification, Mathlib semantic search and Python execution, and each compiled lemma is stored in the context for reuse. A separate sketch model, trained with Rubric RL, turns natural-language proofs into lemma-based Lean sketches whose sub-goals can be proved in parallel. The system reaches about 88% on PutnamBench with roughly 10 H20-days per problem, beating AlphaProof, Hilbert and Aleph Prover on that benchmark. This narrows the gap between formal and informal proving at undergraduate and graduate level.
Key points
- Benchmark results: PutnamBench 580 problems (87.9%), Fate-H 80%, Fate-X 33% and Combibench 48%. Seed-Prover 1.0 (medium) scored 50.4%, 35%, 9% and 39% while using 18 H20-days per problem.
- Baselines on PutnamBench: AlphaProof reached 56.1% using about 500 TPU-days per problem. Hilbert reached 70.0% and Aleph Prover 75.8%.
- Competitions: the system solved 11 of 12 Putnam 2025 problems within 9 hours, using at most 40 H20-days per problem and no
native_decide. On IMO 2025 it solved 5 of 6 problems at about 20 H20-days each, with P2 handled by Seed-Geometry. - Agent setup: Lean verification runs through the LooKeng REPL interface, and Mathlib search is pinned to v4.22.0. A single attempt is limited to a 64K sequence and 28 tool calls.
- Scaling and limits: the solve rate grows log-linearly with test-time compute, and some problems are found only after up to 53 hours of search. Several Erdős problems were proved, but the authors judge them relatively easy or simplified versions. They note that research-level mathematics remains out of reach.
