Bibliography of Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic, and Omotic Linguistics XXIII: 2019
Summary
This piece is not an experimental study. It is the 23rd yearly instalment of a running bibliography that records scholarship from 2019 on the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The goal is to give researchers one place to find a whole year's scattered output: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, grammars, textbooks and reviews, written in English, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Amharic.
Entries are sorted alphabetically by author and grouped into thematic sections: general Afroasiatic work, Ethiopian Semitic, the Cushitic and Omotic branches, reviews of earlier books, and late additions from 2018. Large edited volumes are listed once under a short key, and their chapters then point back to that key. Every co-author receives a "see" pointer to the main entry.
The result is a compact, searchable index covering pp. 188–200 of Aethiopica 23. It matters as a reference tool. It says little about NLP directly, though it does flag digital-humanities and translation-method work on Ge'ez and Amharic. The PDF extraction omitted a middle portion of the list.
Key points
- The volumes indexed by short key include The Semitic Languages (Routledge, 2nd edn, 754 pp.), The Cambridge Handbook of African Linguistics (803 pp.), and Voigt's 5000 Jahre semitohamitische Sprachen.
- The Semitic section has language-profile chapters for Gǝʿǝz, Tigrinya, Amharic, Tigre of Gindaʕ and Gurage (Muher). It also lists work on Ezha, Wolane, Chaha, Mesqan and Argobba.
- Digital resources appear in two places. Liuzzo's 2019 Aethiopica supplement covers digital approaches to Ethiopian and Eritrean studies. Bausi & Liuzzo describe how inscriptions are encoded in Beta Maṣāḥǝft.
- Several items deal with method and lexicography:
- Fridman on analysing and translating written Amharic via predicative units.
- Kogan's additions to Leslau's Comparative Dictionary of Geʿez.
- Papers on teaching Amharic verbs.
- Some reviews are listed for books published in 2015–2018, such as Petrollino's Hamar grammar and Bulakh & Kogan's Arabic–Ethiopic glossary. The Addenda section adds 2018 items that were missed in earlier instalments.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Each big collection is described once under a short key, and each chapter cites only that key plus its page range, so container metadata is never repeated. — For Mova (world): Store a source, document or frame as a single canonical node, and let mentions reference it by key instead of copying its attributes.
- I2. Every co-author gets a "see X" redirect entry, which turns a flat list into an index searchable from any contributor's name. — For Mova (frames): Coreference chains could produce redirect links from each alias or partial name to the canonical entity, so lookups from any surface form resolve explainably.
- I3. Items whose main topic is broader carry a scope tag (e.g., "including Cushitic and Omotic"), making explicit which part of the work is relevant. — For Mova (learn): Tag silver and treebank data with explicit coverage notes (genre, construction types) so evaluation slices and gaps stay visible.
- I4. Late-found items go into a dated Addenda section instead of silently rewriting past volumes, keeping each release stable while still fixing omissions. — For Mova (learn): Version evaluation sets as append-only, with addenda for corrections, so scores from different runs remain comparable and auditable.
- I5. Non-Latin titles are given three ways: original script, scholarly transliteration and an English translation, so nothing is lost and everything is readable. — For Mova (back): When translating through the meta-world, keep the source form, a normalized form and a gloss side by side so every generated rendering can be traced back.
