Analyse de la continuité référentielle dans le corpus d'écrits scolaires français et italien Scolinter

Summary

The paper investigates how young primary school pupils build textual cohesion: how they introduce characters and subsequently refer to them. The authors also compare how children in France and Italy do this. The material is taken from the Scolinter corpus. It is a comparative collection of children's stories from France, Italy and Spain that pupils wrote in response to the same prompt: choose characters from pictures (a cat, a wolf, a robot, a witch) and write a story about them. The authors took 150 texts per language from the second and third grades (CE1, CE2). On the INCEpTION platform, they annotated all mentions of animate characters: noun phrases, pronouns, possessive determiners and zero anaphora. The annotation scheme builds on the protocol of the RésolCo corpus and on Givón's and Ariel's ideas about referent accessibility. After resolving disagreements between annotators, they obtained a gold-standard corpus. French children use personal pronouns more often, whereas Italian children more often use zero anaphora. Common to both languages: a character is usually introduced with an indefinite noun phrase and subsequently referred to with a pronoun. The density of mentions does not change significantly between grades. These data are useful for writing didactics and for comparative studies of coreference in texts by children who are still learning to write.

Key points

  • 150 texts each in French and Italian (grades CE1 and CE2) were annotated. Only animate characters were marked, both those given by the pictures and those invented by the pupils. Generic mentions such as "some cat" were not annotated. The annotation guidelines are available on HAL.
  • Character labels: cat, witch, wolf, robot for the characters from the prompt and ext1, ext2… for other characters in order of their appearance in the text.
  • The French part of Scolinter is the longitudinal Scoledit corpus. It consists of 1 685 texts by the same pupils from CP to CM2 (337 per grade), totalling 178 183 tokens, with an average of about 106 tokens per text. The texts were collected in 2014–2018 in four education authorities (académies).
  • The Italian part comprises 1 487 processed texts collected in schools in Lombardy in 2018–2022. The Spanish part has 813 texts. Because of the COVID pandemic, these two parts are not fully longitudinal.
  • The corpus can be browsed at scoledit.org/scolinter. The middle part of the paper with detailed statistics is missing from the extracted text, so no specific numerical results of the analysis are given here.
