Annotation de la continuité référentielle dans un corpus scolaire – premiers résultats

Summary

The paper belongs to the Scolinter project, which studies how primary school pupils in France, Italy and Spain learn to write. The author aims to develop NLP tools that will help linguists describe the cohesion and coherence of children's texts, above all referential continuity, that is, how a child refers to the same characters throughout a narrative. The study is based on a longitudinal corpus of narrative texts that children wrote from the same picture-based prompt. The annotation is applied to a normalized version of the texts in which spelling has been corrected while the structure remains close to the original. Character mentions and the chains linking them are marked. A separate problem is words omitted by the children, most often pronouns. These omissions break morphosyntactic and dependency analysis, so they were filled with the most probable word according to the FlauBERT model. The paper also reviews French corpora annotated for anaphora and coreference and outlines the next methodological steps. These are preliminary results: the paper presents an annotation model and format, not a finished system. The work is useful for analysing non-standard children's texts, on which typical NLP tools perform poorly.

Key points

  • Scoledit: 4,300 texts were collected, 1,820 of which form the longitudinal part. This comprises 5 texts from each pupil, one per year from CP to CM2. The texts were collected in 38 schools in four academies: Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Grenoble and Lyon.
  • Scolinter currently contains 1,820 French, 1,333 Italian and 813 Spanish texts. The French part is complete, while some of the Italian and Spanish grade levels are still being transcribed and normalized.
  • In grades CE1–CM2, 51% of the omission tags in the normalized texts correspond to pronouns. These tags were replaced automatically using the FlauBERT model.
  • The review of previous work covers the corpora ARCADE, DéDé (48,360 words, 4,910 annotated definite descriptions), Annodis, ANCOR, DEMOCRAT and RésolCo. RésolCo is identified as the only medium-sized French corpus of school texts annotated for referential continuity.
