mR3: Multilingual Rubric-Agnostic Reward Reasoning Models
Paper · 2025 · David Anugraha, Shou-Yi Hung, Zilu Tang et al.
Summary
LLM judges work well for automatic evaluation in English but lose accuracy in other languages, and it is unclear how best to train them multilingually. The authors present mR3, a family of reward reasoning models that grade responses against any supplied rubric, whether human-written or LLM-generated. For each judgment the model produces a reasoning trace, a short justification and a final score, and it supports point-wise, pair-wise and binary formats. To build training data, they pooled over 3 million public examples in 125 languages covering preferences, knowledge, code, math and safety. Rubrics were added with GPT-4.1 where missing, and target outputs were distilled from GPT-OSS-120B. Only difficult, reliably labelled items were kept, giving about 100K samples in 72 languages. The authors also compare English and target-language prompts and reasoning, along with curriculum choices. mR3 reaches state-of-the-art scores on multilingual reward benchmarks and rivals GPT-OSS-120B while being up to 9× smaller. This makes transparent, rubric-driven evaluation more practical for non-English work.
Key points
- Training data spans 72 languages, which the authors describe as the widest coverage among reward models so far. Sources include Human Arena Preference, HelpSteer3-Preference, MMMLU, HumanEval-XL, MATH-500 Multilingual and PolyGuardMix.
- A sample was kept only if two conditions held. First, every GPT-OSS-120B output under different prompt and reasoning language settings had to be correct. Second, GPT-OSS-20B could not solve it consistently over five samples.
- Models come in 4B, 8B and 14B sizes. mR3-Qwen-14B performs comparably to GPT-OSS-120B.
- English is still the strongest language for prompting and reasoning. Targeted multilingual training, however, makes the model more robust to target-language inputs and improves reasoning directly in those languages, even for unseen low-resource languages.
- A human study with 20 annotators across 12 languages favoured mR3's reasoning over existing reward models. The authors also show mR3 is useful for off-policy preference optimization. Models, data and code are released at github.com/rubricreward/mr3.
