Amharic LLaMA and LLaVA: Multimodal LLMs for Low Resource Languages
Summary
Open LLMs handle Amharic poorly. The language has over 50 million speakers, but the author could find under 500 million tokens of it, mostly news and politics. The paper adapts LLaMA-2 7B (base, not chat) to Amharic and adds vision.
The method has four parts:
- Tokenizer: a SentencePiece vocabulary learned on real Amharic is merged into the LLaMA tokenizer.
- Data: Seamless M4T translates English RedPajama text into Amharic, growing the pretraining corpus about ninefold.
- Vision: following the LLaVA recipe, a small MLP links a CLIP encoder to the model, using translated BLIP captions and translated LLaVA instruction data.
- Text instructions: translated Alpaca, Dolly and OpenAssistant data are added, along with mixed English–Amharic and translation tasks.
For evaluation, the author translates MMLU into Amharic-MMLU. The model trained on the larger, mostly synthetic corpus beats the one trained only on real text in most subjects. Both stay below chance on several STEM subjects. The work matters because it gives a cheap recipe for languages too small for ordinary pretraining, and all models and datasets are released openly.
Key points
- Pretraining data totals 3784m tokens: translated RedPajama Wikipedia (1826m, 48%), translated RedPajama Books (1522m, 40%) and real Amharic text (436m, 12%), including Common Crawl and the Azime & Mohammed corpus.
- The tokenizer adds 19008 Amharic SentencePiece tokens to LLaMA's 32000, giving 51008. Original embeddings are kept, and one Amharic greeting shrinks from dozens of byte tokens to 3.
- Training uses LoRA on the attention layers without quantization, for one epoch on a single A100. Pretraining took 1–4 weeks and finetuning 2–7 days, following the Chinese LLaMA and LLaVA-1.5 setups.
- Alpaca and Dolly were translated with the Google Translate API and OpenAssistant with Seamless M4T. OpenAssistant conversation trees were pruned to keep only highly rated replies.
- On Amharic-MMLU, both models fall below random guessing in math, logic and physics. The author suspects that a single mistranslated character can change a question's meaning or its answer.
Interesting ideas
- I1. Counting how many tokens one word needs is a quick way to see where a vocabulary fails a script, and shows when extending it pays off. — For Mova (tokens): Track pieces-per-word on new domains (chemistry names, URLs, rare names) to flag where the tokenizer and tagger see broken units.
- I2. The author openly states that a model trained on machine-translated text cannot exceed the translator's quality, and plans with that ceiling in mind. — For Mova (learn): Treat each silver source (witness parser, LLM teacher tier) as an upper bound on the student, and record which source capped which metric.
- I3. Instruction pairs keep one side in the original English while the other is translated, so known concepts anchor the new tokens. — For Mova (back): When testing translation through the meta-world, pair an original-language side with a generated side, so drift in the meaning graph can be checked against a trusted anchor.
- I4. A below-chance score in a subject is read as a sign that the benchmark is broken (fragile translated STEM items), not just that the model is weak. — For Mova (learn): Add per-category random-guess baselines as negative controls, and audit test items whenever a score drops below chance.
- I5. Translation runs in short chunks, skips overlong sentences, and groups inputs into length buckets for batching before restoring the original order. — For Mova (tree): gparse could bucket sentences by length for GPU batches and map the trees back to corpus order, skipping extreme lengths in a separate pass.
