UltraIF: Advancing Instruction Following from the Wild
Paper · 2025 · Kaikai An, Li Sheng, Ganqu Cui et al.
Summary
Open-source models still follow complex, multi-constraint instructions worse than industry models, partly because leading labs do not release their instruction data. Existing synthetic approaches either depend on an LLM's own ability to rewrite prompts, which limits diversity and response correctness, or on hand-written verifiable rules, which make instructions uniform. UltraIF addresses both problems. An LLM first splits real user prompts into a simpler query, the constraints attached to it, and a yes/no check question for each constraint. These pieces are used to train UltraComposer, which turns a plain query back into a constrained instruction together with its check question. The composer can be applied repeatedly to collected prompts to stack constraints. Sampled responses are then screened with the check questions, producing chosen/rejected pairs for SFT and DPO. With this pipeline, LLaMA-3.1-8B-Base reaches the instruction-following level of LLaMA-3.1-8B-Instruct. Only an 8B model generates and judges the data, and no benchmark information is used. This shows that open, cheap data synthesis can close the alignment gap.
Key points
- Evaluation covers five instruction-following benchmarks: IFEval, Multi-IF, InfoBench, FollowBench and LiveBench. General ability is also tested on math, reasoning, coding and conversation.
- About 200k synthesized examples were enough for the Base model to match its Instruct counterpart. Seed prompts come from sources such as ShareGPT.
- Removing the evaluation-question filtering lowers scores by roughly 3.35–5.36%. The drop grows as instructions become more complex.
- In self-alignment, LLaMA-3.1-8B-Instruct is trained on its own generated data. This improves IFEval by 2.4–5.9% and Multi-IF by 3.74–5.38%.
- The method also works on a Qwen2-7B backbone, where it outperforms AutoIF. Code is released at github.com/kkk-an/UltraIF.
