About

Profile

Romania appears in this library through a short list of research institutions based in the country. An institution is listed when researchers working there wrote more than one of the papers the library holds. Universities, laboratories, companies and other organisations can all qualify in principle. The list sits within the library's broader directory of institutions of all kinds, which offers similar views for other countries and other types of organisation.

On this site, the Romanian list is made up of universities and a research institute, located in Bucharest and in Iași. It shows where the Romanian authors represented in the collection carried out their work. It is not a census of Romanian science. Many organisations in the country may publish a great deal and still be absent, simply because the library holds too few of their papers to meet the threshold. The picture given here is therefore a view of the collection rather than a measure of the country.

How institutions are chosen and ordered

Two rules shape the list. The first is a minimum for inclusion. A single paper linked to an institution is not enough, however much attention that paper has received. Only organisations whose researchers appear on more than one work in the library are shown, so each entry reflects some repeated presence in the collection rather than a one-off contribution.

The second rule concerns order. Institutions are not ranked by size, by age, or by the raw number of papers connected with them. They are ranked by the cited work their scientists did while based there. Because of this, the position of an institution and the totals printed beside its name do not always move together. An organisation with fewer works can sit above one with more, and the citation figure shown next to a name may be larger or smaller than that of its neighbours in the list. The Romanian list illustrates this. The institution at the top is not the one with the largest citation total shown, so readers should treat the order and the printed figures as two related but separate pieces of information.

All of these figures are drawn from the library's current holdings. As new papers are added, both the membership of the list and the order of its entries can change. A Romanian institution that is not shown today may appear later, and the relative positions of those already listed may shift.

The institutions

The first entry is the University of Bucharest, a university located in Bucharest. Its researchers are credited with several of the papers held here, and those papers have been cited by later work. Under the ranking used on the country page, this body of cited work places the university first among the Romanian institutions on the site. Its own page gives the detail of what those papers cover and who wrote them.

The second entry is the Romanian Academy, classed on this site as a research institute and also located in Bucharest. It is the only entry in the Romanian list that is not described as a university. Its works in the library have attracted substantial citation; the total shown beside its name is the largest among the Romanian entries, even though it is listed second. This is a clear example of the difference between the ranking and the printed totals described above.

The third entry is Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, a university in Iași. It is the only listed institution located outside Bucharest. Researchers there are credited with several works in the library that have been cited elsewhere, and its page sets out those works together with the people connected to them.

The fourth entry is the Universitatea Națională de Știință și Tehnologie Politehnica București, a university in Bucharest. It has the fewest works on the site among the Romanian entries, close to the minimum needed to appear at all. Even so, those works have drawn a considerable amount of citation, which shows that a small presence in the collection can still correspond to work that others have built on.

Geography

Among the works here, Romanian research activity clusters in Bucharest. Most of the listed institutions are located there: the University of Bucharest, the Romanian Academy and the Politehnica university. Between them they cover more than one kind of organisation, with a research institute standing alongside universities.

Iași is the other city on the list, represented by Alexandru Ioan Cuza University. Its presence means the Romanian picture on this site is not limited to a single city, even if one city accounts for most of the entries.

This pattern describes only the papers currently in the library. It says nothing definite about how research is distributed across Romania more generally. Other cities, and other institutions in Bucharest and Iași, could appear as the collection grows and more of their researchers' papers reach the threshold for inclusion.

Kinds of institution

The Romanian entries on this site include both universities and a research institute. That mix matters for readers trying to understand the country's presence in the collection. Universities and institutes often organise research differently, and the library records both, classing each one by type on its own page. In the Romanian list, the research institute is the Romanian Academy, while the other entries are all classed as universities.

No companies, hospitals or other kinds of organisation appear among the Romanian entries at present. That reflects the papers held here, not a judgement about the role such bodies play in Romanian research. If the library adds papers whose authors work at Romanian companies or other organisations, and those organisations reach the minimum, they would be listed alongside the existing entries.

Research strengths

The country page does not itself break Romanian work down by field or topic. Subject information is kept on the pages of the individual institutions, where each organisation's works and their themes are listed. Readers who want to know which areas of science Romanian authors in this collection have pursued should begin with those pages.

Because the list combines a research institute with several universities, the institutional pages may well cover a range of subjects, but the precise fields can only be confirmed by consulting each page in turn. The country view is best used as a starting point that points towards those more detailed descriptions.

Leading scientists

Individual researchers are not named at the country level. The people connected with each Romanian institution are listed on that institution's own page, in the order the library gives them, together with the works they wrote while based there. Students and journalists looking for the scientists behind the Romanian papers in our library will find them by following the links to the University of Bucharest, the Romanian Academy, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the Politehnica university.

Landmark works

The country page likewise does not single out particular papers. The most cited works associated with Romanian institutions are listed on the institutional pages, each with its citations. The totals shown beside each name on the country page give a rough sense of where the more widely cited work has been done among the entries here, with the Romanian Academy showing the largest total, but the papers themselves and what they did are described one level down.

Collaborations

Links between the Romanian institutions, and between them and partners in other countries, are not set out on the country page. Co-authorship is recorded with individual works, and the institutional pages are where joint work becomes visible. Readers interested in whether researchers in Bucharest and Iași have written papers together, or how Romanian authors on this site have worked with colleagues abroad, should trace those connections through the works listed for each institution.

Over time

The country page gives no breakdown of works by year, so it cannot show how the Romanian presence in the library has developed. Questions about when each institution's papers appeared, or whether their subjects changed over the years, have to be answered from the institutional pages and the works listed there.

What the country page does show is the present state of the collection. Romanian research on this site is carried by a small set of institutions, concentrated in Bucharest with a further entry in Iași, each linked to more than one paper and each with work that others have cited. As the library grows, this snapshot will change, and the country page will reflect those changes in both the institutions it lists and the order in which it lists them.
