The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

  1. An Evaluation Tool for Machine Translation: Fast Evaluation for MT Research (2000 · 366 citations)
The paper addresses a practical bottleneck in MT research: system variants are run again and again on the same test set, and the outputs need quality judgements that are cheap, fast and consistent.
  2. Statistical Machine Translation with Scarce Resources Using Morpho-syntactic Information (2004 · 197 citations)
Most statistical MT systems built on the IBM models treat each inflected word form as an unrelated token. This wastes bilingual data, especially when the source language is highly inflected, as German is. Nießen and Ney study how morphological and syntactic knowledge can make up for small parallel corpora.
