Papers
- Word Length Frequency and Distribution in English: Observations, Theory, and Implications for the Construction of Verse Lines (1998 · 3 citations)
Constable had earlier proposed that writing metrical verse is a search through source text for runs of complete words that add up to a target syllable count. He claimed that the number of such runs equals the word count divided by the mean syllables per word. Aoyama and Constable set out to prove this mathematically. - Isometric Lineation in English Texts: An Empirical and Mathematical Examination of its Character and Consequences (1998)
The paper addresses a long-standing gap in poetics: readers can easily tell isometric verse from prose, but no one had measured the difference or described it mathematically.
