MultiWOZ 2.4: A Multi-Domain Task-Oriented Dialogue Dataset with Essential Annotation Corrections to Improve State Tracking Evaluation
Summary
Dialogue state tracking research relies heavily on MultiWOZ, but even its corrected releases (2.1–2.3) still have many wrong or inconsistent state labels. This noise makes model scores unreliable, and differing cleanup scripts across papers make comparisons unfair. The authors built MultiWOZ 2.4 on top of MultiWOZ 2.1. They manually re-annotated only the validation and test splits and deliberately left the training split noisy to encourage noise-robust learning. They defined six error categories, then corrected the turn-active slots themselves in two passes, which took about one month. They also normalized surface variants of values and converted all times to 24-hour format. Eight state-of-the-art trackers were re-evaluated, and every one scored clearly higher in joint goal accuracy than on 2.1. A five-rater human study confirmed that the new labels are more accurate. The resource gives the field a cleaner and shared evaluation benchmark. It also offers a natural testbed for training methods that cope with noisy labels.
Key points
- Scope of the correction: the 2,000 validation/test dialogues (over 14,000 turns, 5 domains, 30 slots) were revised. Changes affect about 41% of turns in about 66% of dialogues, with roughly 1.53 slots corrected per revised turn.
- Error types: the six categories are Context Mismatch, Missing Annotation, Not Mentioned, Incomplete Value, Implicit Time Processing, and Unnecessary Annotation. Missing Annotation and Not Mentioned are the most frequent.
- Benchmark results: the eight models are SUMBT, STAR, TRADE, PIN, SOM-DST, SimpleTOD, SAVN, and TripPy. STAR's test joint goal accuracy rises from 56.36% to 73.62%. SOM-DST gains 15.54 points, while SimpleTOD gains the least at 5.43 points.
- Human validation: the average rater score was 0.1653 and Fleiss' kappa was 0.9226. About 20% of labels were judged better in 2.4, versus about 1% better in 2.1, and most of those cases involve the ambiguous slot hotel-type.
- Availability: the dataset is released at github.com/smartyfh/MultiWOZ2.4.
