The AI Scientist-v2: Workshop-Level Automated Scientific Discovery via Agentic Tree Search

Summary
The AI Scientist-v2, from Sakana AI and collaborators, is an end-to-end agent that carries out machine learning research with no human involvement. It generates ideas, runs experiments, plots results and writes papers. Its predecessor, The AI Scientist-v1, needed a hand-written code template for every new topic and tested hypotheses in a single shallow sequence. Version 2 drops the templates. It begins each project with broad, proposal-style idea generation and checks novelty against Semantic Scholar. Experiments then run as a staged, parallel tree search, overseen by an experiment manager agent and inspired by AIDE. A vision-language model critiques the figures and captions. To test the system, the authors entered three fully generated papers in an ICLR 2025 workshop. One of them scored well enough to have been accepted had a human written it. This is presented as the first wholly AI-produced paper to clear peer review. The authors note that workshop standards fall below those of main conferences. They have open-sourced the code and the experiment data.
Key points
- Removed bottlenecks: v2 needs no human-authored code templates. Exploration is tree-based rather than linear, and experiments run in parallel. Paper writing changed from v1's step-by-step Aider workflow to a single drafting pass followed by reflection with reasoning models such as o1.
- Peer-review result: Of three papers submitted to an ICLR 2025 workshop, one received an average reviewer score of 6.33. That placed it in roughly the top 45% of submissions, above the typical acceptance threshold.
- Content of the accepted paper: It tested a regularizer that penalizes large changes in embeddings between consecutive time steps, aiming to improve compositional generalization. On synthetic arithmetic-expression datasets this gave no significant gains and sometimes hurt performance, a negative result. The authors' own review found unclear method details, possible dataset overlap and inaccurate figure captions.
- Tree search design: Each node in the search holds a code state with a score. The best-performing checkpoints are carried forward through successive experiment stages. The approach adapts AIDE, which performed strongly on MLEBench.
- Resources: The code is available at github.com/SakanaAI/AI-Scientist-v2, together with the workshop experiment data. The paper also discusses ethics and AI safety, including the risk of using such systems to game peer review.
