OpenStance: Real-world Zero-shot Stance Detection
Summary
Zero-shot stance detection has mostly been studied within a single corpus. Topics are split into seen and unseen sets, but all texts come from one domain, few unseen topics are tested, and some topics still require labeled data. The authors argue this is far from real deployment. They define OpenStance, where one model must label stance (support/oppose/neutral) for texts from any domain and topics of any form, either noun phrases or full claims, using no training or development annotations.
Their approach combines two label-free signals. Indirect supervision comes from an MNLI-trained entailment model: the text serves as premise, and the hypothesis is built from the topic plus a stance template. Weak supervision comes from GPT-3 through two masking prompts. MASK-topic generates a topic from a text and a stance. MASK-text generates a text from a topic and a stance.
Tested on VAST, SemT6 and Perspectrum, the combined system outperforms task-specific supervised models on average. This shows that cross-domain stance detection is possible without topic-level annotation.
Key points
- Evaluation spans three datasets with different domains, topic counts and topic forms: VAST (news comments), SemT6 (tweets) and Perspectrum. Label-oriented macro F1 is the shared metric.
- The system averages 72.6 macro F1 across the three datasets, compared with 69.3 for supervised dataset-specific models. In contrast, a model trained only on VAST reaches just 49.0 F1 on Perspectrum, close to random guessing.
- Starting from entailment (MNLI) training sharply cuts the synthetic data required. About 500 GPT-3 examples give results similar to roughly 10k weak examples used alone.
- Error analysis of MASK-topic shows that about 85% of faulty instances come from GPT-3 mishandling negation or the requested stance. MASK-text outputs are seldom wrong about stance, but over half are short and uninformative.
- Data and code are publicly released at github.com/xhz0809/OpenStance.
