Scoring the Translation: On Target Automatic Keyword-Based Evaluation of Machine Translation in the Sports Domain
Summary
This paper revisits SportsEval, an English→Icelandic test suite submitted to the WMT 2025 General Translation Shared Task. The suite tests how well MT systems handle sports terminology. In the original evaluation, automatic keyword matching scored the top systems far lower than human judges did. The authors set out to find out why and to fix it.
They re-examined all 300 segments, which cover football, basketball, chess, golf and gymnastics. They dropped keywords that are not truly domain terms, capped repetitions, and added alternative Icelandic translations. They also expanded the word-form registry, drawing on the DIM inflection database plus manually listed forms, which matters because Icelandic is highly inflected and compounds freely.
The revised keyword method was run in two variants, whole-word matching and substring matching. Both were compared with manual evaluation of six systems and with the reference-free metrics CometKiwi and GEMBA-MQM.
After revision, automatic scores closely track human judgments. This suggests that a carefully curated keyword approach can reliably evaluate terminology translation into a morphologically rich language. The authors also release English–Icelandic sports term lists.
Key points
- The test suite has 300 segments: 100 football, 100 basketball, 50 chess, 25 golf and 25 gymnastics. Evaluated term instances were cut from 971 to 717, with 365 keywords appearing once and 145 recurring, at most three times per sport.
- In the original evaluation, the top four systems scored 47%–55% automatically versus 71%–78% manually. After revision, the gap largely disappears; for example, Gemini-2.5-Pro gets 90.0% with string matching, 88.1% with word matching and 90.7% from human evaluation.
- Substring matching accounts for compounds containing the term but can produce false positives. Word-token matching is stricter. Both variants are reported.
- One human evaluator assessed six systems: the top four plus two lower-scoring systems. The two weaker systems served as a check that adding accepted translations based on the top systems' output did not bias the results.
- The authors make available bilingual English–Icelandic sports terminology lists together with a revised version of the SportsEval suite, and they provide an error analysis of terminology mistakes made by modern MT systems.
