Onomasiological Sense Alignment Across Dialect Dictionaries. A Taxonomy-Constrained LLM Classification

Summary

German dialect dictionaries are hard to compare or interlink. They are ordered by word form, follow differing editorial conventions, and describe meanings in brief, non-parallel glosses. The authors address this lack of semantic interoperability by mapping individual dictionary senses onto a shared concept hierarchy: the Hallig–Wartburg (HW) system, in Rudolf Post's extended adaptation for dialect lexicography. The Hessen-Nassauisches Wörterbuch (HNWb) serves as the main case. A reproducible pipeline breaks its entries into sense-levels, and an LLM then chooses categories under strict taxonomic constraints. The output is checked against expert annotation and across repeated classification runs. The model's agreement with itself between runs is roughly equal to agreement between human experts. Results remain stable at coarse taxonomy levels and degrade predictably for finer categories. A network-based proof of concept links HNWb senses to three other dialect dictionaries, revealing related words that alphabetical ordering keeps apart. The approach lays groundwork for concept-based access to dialect lexica and to other resources with sparse sense descriptions.

Key points

  • Run-to-run LLM agreement reaches κ = 0.73, almost identical to inter-annotator agreement among experts (κ = 0.74).
  • The conceptual backbone is Post's (1998; extended 2026) numerically indexed reworking of the HW taxonomy, for example category 2100 "Sky, Celestial Bodies". The version used follows the Fränkisches Wörterbuch.
  • The primary data is the HNWb. The MWb (Low German), PfWb (Central German) and Schweizerisches Idiotikon (Upper German) are used for cross-dictionary linking.
  • The analysis covers only the alphabetic range N, the single segment available in all four dictionaries. Senses without usable glosses were excluded.
  • In the network view, HNWb Neulicht 'new moon' and PfWb Nachthimmel 'night sky' become connected through shared higher-level concept nodes. The authors stress that sharing a category does not mean the senses are equivalent at finer levels.
