ASSET: A Dataset for Tuning and Evaluation of Sentence Simplification Models with Multiple Rewriting Transformations

Summary
Automatic sentence simplification (SS) systems are usually tested on references that reflect only one kind of edit. TurkCorpus mostly contains lexical paraphrases, and HSplit contains only sentence splits. Newsela is more varied, but its alignments are automatic and its licence restricts sharing. To fix this, the authors built ASSET, an English evaluation and tuning resource. It reuses the 2,359 source sentences of TurkCorpus. Crowd workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk, screened by a qualification test, rewrote each sentence ten times. They were free to combine several operations, such as paraphrasing, splitting, reordering and deletion.
In pairwise human comparisons, ASSET references were judged simpler and more fluent than those in TurkCorpus and HSplit. They were judged somewhat less faithful to the original meaning. The authors also collected human ratings of system outputs, using ASSET as the reference set. Neither BLEU nor SARI correlated strongly with perceived simplicity. ASSET therefore lets researchers test models on more abstractive, multi-operation rewriting, and it shows that better automatic metrics are needed.
Key points
- ASSET contains 23,590 human simplifications, ten for each of the 2,359 TurkCorpus originals. It keeps TurkCorpus's split of 2,000 validation and 359 test sentences, and it is released under CC-BY-NC on GitHub (facebookresearch/asset).
- Workers needed an approval rate of at least 95%, more than 1,000 approved HITs, and US/UK/Canada residency, and they had to pass a qualification test.
- Compared with TurkCorpus (359 test pairs), ASSET won on simplicity (41.2% vs 20.1%) and fluency (38.4% vs 22.8%). TurkCorpus was preferred for meaning (37.9% vs 23.7%). Against HSplit, ASSET's advantage on simplicity was larger (59.0% vs 14.8%).
- For the metric study, the authors used 100 outputs from PBSMT-R, Hybrid, SBSMT-SARI, NTS-SARI and ACCESS, each rated by 15 workers. Agreement measured by quadratic weighted κ was 0.687 for fluency, 0.686 for meaning and 0.628 for simplicity.
- BLEU and SARI were computed at sentence level with the EASSE package. Neither tracked simplicity judgements well when the references involved multiple transformations.
