Multi-modal Stance Detection: New Datasets and Model
Summary
Most stance detection research analyses text alone. On social media, though, users often pair a short post with an image, and the image may be what reveals their position on a target. This paper frames stance detection as a multi-modal problem and supplies both data and a baseline method. The authors built five Twitter datasets in which each example is a target, an English text and one image. Three extend existing text-only stance corpora, and two cover new topics. For modelling, they introduce TMPT (Targeted Multi-modal Prompt Tuning). It builds a target-specific prompt for each modality, feeds these prompts into pre-trained language and vision encoders, and joins the two resulting feature vectors by simple concatenation. Experiments cover two settings: in-target, and zero-shot, where test targets are unseen during training. In both, TMPT outperforms strong baselines overall. The resource is important because visual content carries a large part of the stance signal. Even so, images with embedded text, memes or mixed content remain hard for current models.
Key points
- Five datasets were constructed, namely M TWQ, M RUC, M WTWT, M CCQ and M TSE:
- M TSE, M CCQ and M WTWT extend Twitter Stance Election 2020, COVID-CQ and Will-They-Won't-They.
- M RUC covers the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict, and M TWQ covers the Taiwan Question.
- Together they hold 17,544 examples across 12 targets.
- Annotation process:
- Eight experienced researchers labelled the data, with three annotators per sample and a majority vote deciding the label.
- Only 2.54% of samples needed extra annotators to resolve disagreement.
- Average Cohen's Kappa ranged from 0.689 to 0.752 across datasets, higher than the 0.67 reported for the original WTWT.
- Image analysis showed that roughly half of the stance information comes from the visual modality. The mix of image types (person, events, words, memes, mixed) differs considerably between datasets.
- Error analysis findings:
- Zero-shot performance was good on M WTWT, where all targets concern company mergers, but weaker on the datasets with more varied topics.
- About 70% of misclassified samples contained images with stance-related content.
- Only tweet IDs and labels are released, at github.com/Leon-Francis/Multi-Modal-Stance-Detection. Stated limitations include hand-crafted prompts for each target, no use of external knowledge, and no audio or video modalities.
