PaLI: A Jointly-Scaled Multilingual Language-Image Model
Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2209.06794
Summary
PaLI (Pathways Language and Image model), from Google Research, explores how to scale vision-language models so that one network can handle many image, text and multimodal tasks across many languages. Every task is framed the same way: the model receives an image plus a text prompt and produces text, with no task-specific heads. The architecture combines two pre-trained components. Patch features from a Vision Transformer go, without pooling, into an mT5 encoder-decoder. To make the vision side closer in size to the language side, the authors trained ViT-e, a new 4B-parameter vision model. For pre-training they built WebLI, a web-mined collection of about 10 billion images paired with text in over 100 languages, and trained on a multilingual mixture of objectives. The largest model, PaLI-17B, set new state-of-the-art results on captioning and VQA benchmarks. Performance kept improving as both components grew. Enlarging the vision encoder gave the larger gain for the added parameters, which points to a scaling direction for future multimodal models.
Key points
- Components: PaLI-17B combines mT5-XXL (13B) with ViT-e (4B). ViT-e makes up roughly a quarter of all parameters. The 2B ViT-G was also tested as an image encoder.
- ViT-e on image-only tasks: 90.9% after ImageNet fine-tuning and 84.9% on ObjectNet.
- Multimodal results:
- COCO Captioning (Karpathy split): 149.1 CIDEr.
- VQAv2: 84.3% with open-vocabulary generation, beating CoCa, SimVLM and BEiT-3, which were evaluated as fixed-vocabulary classifiers.
- WebLI dataset:
- About 9.6B instances (roughly 260 TB), collected in 2021–2022.
- Each image comes with its alt-text, page title and OCR text.
- Filtered for PII and adult content.
- Not shared outside Google.
- Scaling and training findings: No performance saturation was seen at 17B. A mixture of pre-training objectives improved results, and the multilingual model still reached SOTA on English-only tasks.
