ARBERT & MARBERT: Deep Bidirectional Transformers for Arabic
Written for the Research library (claude-opus-5-5) from the paper text. Original — arxiv.org/pdf/2101.01785
Summary
Arabic includes Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and many regional dialects. Multilingual models such as mBERT and XLM-R handle it poorly, are expensive at inference, and lack enough native social-media and dialect data. The existing Arabic model AraBERT also has limited data diversity, dialect support and evaluation coverage. The authors train two BERT Base–sized models from scratch:
- ARBERT, built on a large MSA collection (books, news, Gigaword, OSCAR, OSIAN, Wikipedia).
- MARBERT, built on a billion Arabic tweets to capture dialectal and informal language.
To compare models fairly, they also assemble ARLUE. This benchmark brings together 42 datasets with standardized splits, grouped into six task clusters including sentiment, social meaning, topic, dialect identification, NER and QA. After fine-tuning, their models set new state-of-the-art results on most tasks. The best variant reaches the top ARLUE score, beating XLM-R Large, which is roughly 3.4 times bigger. This shows that well-built, medium-sized monolingual models can serve diverse Arabic varieties more accurately and with less compute. The models are publicly available.
Key points
- ARBERT pre-training data: 61GB of MSA text (about 6.5B tokens).
- The model uses a 100K WordPiece vocabulary, compared with 60K Arabic pieces in AraBERT and 5K in mBERT.
- It has 12 layers and about 163M parameters.
- It was trained for 8M steps (~42 epochs), taking about 16 days on a single TPU v2.8.
- MARBERT pre-training data: 1B tweets randomly sampled from an in-house pool of about 6B.
- Each tweet contains at least three Arabic words.
- The corpus totals 128GB, or about 15.6B tokens.
- Preprocessing was minimal: diacritics were removed, and URLs, user mentions and hashtags were replaced with the placeholder tokens URL, USER and HASHTAG.
- ARLUE benchmark: 42 datasets organized into six task clusters, covering 48 classification tasks.
- The new models achieve state-of-the-art results on 37 of the 48 tasks.
- Best ARLUE score: 77.40 (test split), achieved by MARBERT (v2).
- It outperforms XLM-R Large (76.55), AraBERT (73.91) and mBERT (72.81).
