UTRAG at SemEval-2026 Task 8: History-Aware Query Rewriting and LoRA-Finetuned Generation for Multi-Turn RAG
Paper · 2026 · Ke Zhou and Yi-Shan Lin
Summary
This paper describes a University of Tübingen system for SemEval-2026 Task 8 (MTRAGEval). The task evaluates retrieval-augmented generation on English multi-turn dialogues, where follow-up questions often only make sense given earlier turns. The authors built a modular pipeline on Qwen models.
For retrieval (Subtask A), the pipeline works in several steps:
- Qwen2.5-7B replaces pronouns in earlier turns with explicit entities.
- Qwen3-embedding-8B selects the useful prior questions: the latest one plus the two most similar.
- Qwen3-30B rewrites the current question as a self-contained query.
- Passages are fetched with Qwen3-4B dense embeddings in FAISS and reordered by a MiniLM cross-encoder, which receives a more context-rich query.
For generation from gold passages (Subtask B), Qwen3-14B was fine-tuned with LoRA. Subtask C chains both components. The system outperformed the strongest official baselines in A and B and came close in C.
The work shows two things. Dialogue-aware query reformulation clearly helps dense retrieval, and a modestly sized, parameter-efficiently tuned open model can rival far larger ones. Errors that accumulate over long conversations remain the main weakness.
Key points
- Official test results:
- Subtask A: nDCG@5 of 0.4855, ranked 12th of 38, versus 0.4795 for the ELSER + GPT-OSS-20B rewrite baseline.
- Subtask B: harmonic mean of 0.6554, ranked 15th of 26, versus 0.6390 for gpt-oss-120b.
- Subtask C: 0.5159, ranked 16th of 29, versus 0.5366 for qwen-30b-a3b-thinking.
- Data comes from the MTRAG benchmark: 110 conversations averaging 7.7 turns, for 842 tasks. It spans four corpora (ClapNQ, Cloud, FiQA, Govt) split into 512-token passages.
- LoRA settings were r = 32, α = 64, dropout 0.1, applied to q/k/v/o projections with a 4096-token limit. The pipeline retrieves the top-50 passages and reranks them down to the top-5.
- In the ablation, dropping history-aware rewriting lowered nDCG@10 for Qwen2.5-7B from 0.4466 to 0.4287.
- Some components were tested but excluded from the final system:
- a four-way answerability classifier (RoBERTa or LoRA), which was biased toward the ANSWERABLE class;
- sub-query decomposition.
- Code, data and analysis scripts are released on GitHub.
