Omni-I2C: A Holistic Benchmark for High-Fidelity Image-to-Code Generation
Paper · 2026 · Jiawei Zhou, Chi Zhang, Xiang Feng et al.
Summary
Omni-I2C is a benchmark that tests whether Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) can turn structured digital graphics into executable code that reproduces the original image. Earlier image-to-code benchmarks such as ChartMimic, Plot2Code and Design2Code each cover one narrow domain, like charts or web pages. Omni-I2C instead covers many domains, programming languages and visual formats.
The authors collected 1,130 image–code pairs from real-world sources, including the Matplotlib Gallery, TikZ.net, tutorials and existing datasets. Every pair passed sandbox execution checks, manual auditing and decontamination. Model outputs are run to produce a rendered image. They are then scored along two separate axes: code-level symbolic precision and image-level perceptual fidelity. The authors report that this scoring agrees well with human judgment.
The authors tested 13 proprietary and open-weight LMMs. Even frontier systems such as Gemini 3 Pro and GPT-5.1 often fail to keep complex structures intact. The benchmark matters because rendering exposes even small perception errors, such as a wrong subscript or coordinate. This gives a denser and more objective test of visual grounding than VQA-style evaluation.
Key points
- Dataset composition: 1,130 curated samples spanning 5 code types (Python, LaTeX, HTML, SVG, SMILES), 8 major subjects (e.g., Mathematics, Chemistry, Biomedicine, Economics) and 43 figure types, including molecular structures and geographical maps.
- Metrics: functional (S_func), parameter-level (S_para), image-level (S_img) and execution-rate (Exec) scores.
- Prompting sensitivity:
- Results depend strongly on the prompting strategy.
- GPT 4.1 mini's S_func rises from 45.80 (Direct) to 64.19 (Hint-Enhanced).
- Reasoning-style prompts (Hint-Enhanced, Self-Commentary) generally help.
- Coordinate-grid Scaffold prompts usually hurt performance.
- Error analysis:
- The authors manually audited outputs from Claude 4.5 Sonnet, Gemini 3 Pro and Qwen3-VL-235B-A22B-Instruct.
- Entity-integrity and spatial-layout errors together make up over 60% of failures.
- Qwen3-VL produced the most errors of the three models.
- Stated limitations: the benchmark has no natural scene images, and it depends on LLM/LMM-as-a-judge, which adds cost and latency. Data and code are available at github.com/MiliLab/Omni-I2C.
