AED-RAG: Continuous Multi-Granular Context Fusion for Retrieval-Augmented Generation via Adaptive Ensemble Decoding
Paper · 2026 · Junzhe Zhou, Fulin Lin, Tairan Cheng et al.
Summary
Retrieval-augmented generation usually feeds an LLM whole passages. These carry useful narrative context but also irrelevant detail. Atomic units such as knowledge triplets are denser but fragmented. Standard top-k reranking also makes hard cut-offs and cannot weigh retrieved evidence against what the model already knows.
AED-RAG addresses both issues. Triplets are extracted offline from corpus passages, giving a mixed pool of passages and triplets. A utility predictor is fine-tuned on this pool by distilling Contrastive Perplexity (CPPL) scores from a teacher LLM, so it estimates how much each unit actually helps generation. At inference, Adaptive Ensemble Decoding turns these utilities into weights for passages, triplets and the model's parametric memory. It then mixes their next-token distributions. This fusion step is training-free and needs no architectural changes.
On four open-domain QA benchmarks, AED-RAG beats strong baselines. Its predictor also transfers across Qwen models without retraining. The work shows that soft, token-level fusion of evidence at several granularities can outperform discrete context selection.
Key points
- The motivating analysis shows no single source is always best. Passages give the highest CPPL utility for 57.8% of HotpotQA and 52.8% of Natural Questions queries. Triplets win for 35.5% and 32.9%, and internal knowledge for 6.7% and 14.3%.
- The utility predictor was trained on Qwen3-8B annotations and reused unchanged with other readers. Gains over the BGE-reranker baseline (HotpotQA / NQ averages) were:
- Qwen3-1.7B: +2.19 / +1.44
- Qwen2.5-7B: +1.90 / +1.18
- Qwen3-14B: +2.37 / +1.62 (reaching 44.88 / 35.08)
- Alignment is essential. Using raw BGE-reranker scores as ensemble weights gave no improvement and degraded results on all datasets except WebQuestions.
- Triplets alone do not explain the gains. Adding triplets to standard RAG or BGE-reranker pipelines brought little or negative change, while AED-RAG reached 42.55 / 35.07 average scores (Table 4).
- The authors list three limitations: single-passage focus, a fixed retrieval count m, and evaluation only on standard benchmarks.
