Neo-Classic: A Benchmark for Evaluating Linguistic-Aesthetic Reasoning in Classical Chinese Poetry
Paper · 2026 · Han Zhang, Zihan Gu, Zhiyuan Wang et al.
Summary
LLMs score very highly on existing Classical Chinese Poetry benchmarks such as WenMind, CCPM and ACP. Because canonical Tang and Song poems are almost certainly in pre-training data, those scores may reflect recall rather than genuine understanding of poetic rules. NEO-CLASSIC tests this by comparing model behaviour on historical poems with behaviour on 1,406 new works by contemporary experts. The new poems strictly follow the tonal, rhyme, parallelism and metrical rules of Regulated Verse (Lyu) and Ci, but their content does not appear in historical corpora. The benchmark uses five probe types, including authorship attribution, couplet matching and a sentence reordering task that requires planning at the level of the whole poem. Models such as Qwen3-Max, Gemini-3-Pro, DeepSeek-V3.2 and GPT-5-Pro were evaluated against human experts. On contemporary texts, model accuracy fell by roughly 20–50%, while expert accuracy stayed stable. Reordering accuracy was very low. The results suggest that current LLMs handle local form but lack robust global, hierarchical reasoning about poems, and that contamination-free test data is needed to measure this.
Key points
- Corpus: 1,406 contemporary Lyu and Ci works by 30 consenting poets, curated with the SJTU Classical Chinese Culture Club. Code and data are at github.com/lyy0323/NEO-CLASSIC.
- Memorization Gap: Accuracy on authorship and couplet-matching tasks drops by about 20–50% when moving from historical to contemporary poems. Human experts show little drop.
- Sentence reordering: Standard models score 0–13%. Gemini-3-Pro reaches 36% with Expert-Level Guidance prompts, compared with 48% for human experts.
- Error analysis on formal constraints:
- Gemini-3-Pro scores 59% on rhyme validation and 55% on parallel-couplet identification.
- Experts score 86% and 80% on the same checks.
- Experts make more purely semantic ordering errors (26%), for example swapping the opening and closing lines.
- Limitations: The corpus is small, the expert baseline comes only from university participants, and the analysis is purely behavioural, with no study of attention or other internal mechanisms.
