A Multi-Strategy Fusion Framework for Dynamic Mental State Modeling

Summary
The paper describes a system for the CLPsych 2026 shared task, which tracks how a person's mental state changes across their social media posts using the MIND framework's Affect, Behavior, Cognition, and Desire (ABCD) elements. The data is a small set of anonymized Reddit timelines. The authors build a three-stage pipeline:
- Task 1 (ABCD element tagging): they compare zero-shot Llama-3.1-8B, Qwen-3-8B tuned with QLoRA, and a hierarchical TextCNN.
- Task 2 (detecting Switches and Escalations): a cascaded Bi-LSTM uses Mental-BERT post embeddings plus a log-scaled gap between posts. The predicted switch probability is passed on as a hint for escalation detection.
- Task 3 (clinical summaries): Qwen-2.5-7B writes the summaries, using predicted upstream labels and retrieved training examples (BGE-based RAG).
The time-aware change detector placed second on the official Task 2 leaderboard. The tagging and summarization stages performed weakly. The model attached the same maladaptive labels to very different posts, and these mistakes carried into the summaries as reversed valence and invented elements. The work shows that modeling posting gaps helps change detection, and that errors cascading through the pipeline remain a major obstacle.
Key points
- Data: 30 timelines and 373 posts, of which 236 (63.27%) carry MIND annotations. Only open-source models were used, with no proprietary APIs, on 8GB VRAM hardware.
- Task 2 model: each post becomes a 769-dimensional input, combining a 768-dimensional Mental-BERT [CLS] vector with log(Δt+1) of the hours since the previous post. It feeds a 3-layer Bi-LSTM trained with Focal Loss.
- Task 2 result: second place on the official leaderboard.
- Task 1 result: did not beat the official baseline. The authors attribute this to a low uniform threshold (0.15), no top-k limit, and a hierarchical bias toward complete label paths.
- Task 3.1 setup: retrieves K=2 similar training sequences via cosine similarity, uses greedy decoding, and caps output at 350 words.
- Task 3.1 scores: BERTScore around 0.317 but weak factual consistency (CS 0.615, CT 0.848).
- Task 3.2: combines frequency analysis, K-Means clustering, and Qwen-based distillation to describe recurring patterns of improvement and deterioration.
