Beyond Explicit Refusals: Soft-Failure Attacks on Retrieval-Augmented Generation
Paper · 2026 · Wentao Zhang, Yan Zhuang, ZhuHang Zheng et al.
Summary
Known jamming attacks on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) make the system refuse to answer. Such refusals are easy to spot, and the injected text often has unusually high perplexity. This paper defines a quieter availability threat called soft failure. Here the model still writes a fluent, on-topic reply, but it avoids committing to any answer and blames vague or invented conflicts between sources. To produce this behaviour, the authors built DEJA (Deceptive Evolutionary Jamming Attack), a black-box method. DEJA uses an auxiliary LLM to generate one poisoned document per target query. It then refines that document through evolutionary search. The search rewards two things: ranking high in retrieval, and pushing down an LLM-judged Answer Utility Score (AUS). The attack exploits the cautious, hedging habits that safety alignment builds into models. Experiments used several RAG setups on Natural Questions, HotpotQA and FiQA. DEJA reliably produced low-utility answers, rarely caused outright refusals, and beat earlier attacks. These results show that detectors based on refusal keywords or perplexity are not enough to protect RAG systems built on open corpora.
Key points
- DEJA reaches SASR above 79% across configurations while keeping hard-failure (explicit refusal) rates below 15%.
- The poisoned documents pass perplexity-based detection. They also survive query paraphrasing (SASR > 83%), and one document often disrupts 3–5 related queries on the same sub-topic.
- Enlarging the retrieval window (k = 4 to 10) does not weaken the attack: SASR stays above 85% for Llama-2-7B, Llama-2-13B and Mistral-7B. For Mistral-7B on NQ, it rises from 85.56% to 92.22%.
- The documents transfer across model families, including proprietary systems, without being re-optimized. The authors note that their proprietary-model tests were small because of access limits.
- The evaluation covers only factual QA on limited data because of API costs. Defenses such as SelfRAG, Chain-of-Verification and Citation Checking are tested in an appendix. Training-based soft-failure detectors are left for future work.
