HyperCLOVA X Technical Report

Paper · 2024 · Kang Min Yoo, Jaegeun Han, Sookyo In et al.

Summary

Most large language models are built mainly for English and carry the cultural assumptions of English-speaking, especially North American, data. They handle Korean language and context poorly. NAVER Cloud's HyperCLOVA X addresses this with two models: the larger HCX-L and the lighter HCX-S. Both are decoder-only transformers with rotary position embeddings, pre-normalization and grouped-query attention.

They were pretrained on roughly equal shares of Korean text, multilingual text (mostly English) and code. The data was filtered for quality, hate speech, advertising and PII. Alignment used supervised fine-tuning on human-annotated data and then RLHF with PPO.

Across Korean and English benchmarks covering reasoning, knowledge, coding, math, chat and safety, the authors report the strongest Korean reasoning and cultural knowledge among the models compared. English performance is competitive. The models also generalize to languages they were not targeted at, and the authors claim state-of-the-art translation between Korean and Japanese or Chinese. The report is presented as a guide for countries that want to build their own sovereign LLMs.

Key points

  • Data and tokenizer: About one third of the pretraining data is Korean. The tokenizer is a morpheme-aware byte-level BPE with a 100,000-token vocabulary. On Oscar and the Stack samples, it encodes Korean more compactly than the GPT-4, LLaMA and Gemma tokenizers.
  • Training scheme: Pretraining combined PSM and SPM objectives to teach in-filling. 90% of training used a 4,096-token context, and the final 10% used 32,768 tokens.
  • Alignment: The reward model starts from the post-SFT model, is trained for a single epoch to avoid overfitting, and has its rewards normalized and clipped at inference time.
  • Bias evaluation: On KoBBQ, HCX-L reached 73.74% accuracy on ambiguous contexts and 95.40% on disambiguated ones, the best among the models compared.
  • Safety evaluation: Human red-teaming covered 1,695 turns in 339 dialogs. Safety preference scores were 4.21 for HCX-S, 3.82 for HCX-L and 4.23 for GPT-4. Attack success rates on 305 held-out dialogs adapted from HH-RLHF were 5.93% for HCX-S and 7.42% for HCX-L.
