ROMA: Real-time Omni-Multimodal Assistant with Interactive Streaming Understanding

Paper · 2026 · Tian Xueyun, Wei Li, Bingbing Xu et al.

Summary

ROMA tackles streaming audio-video understanding: an assistant must watch and listen to a live stream, answer questions when asked (reactive mode), and speak up unprompted when something relevant happens (proactive mode). Earlier systems tend to cover only part of this. Speech-oriented streaming models cannot see, and streaming VideoLLMs mostly ignore audio and handle only alerts or only narration. ROMA builds on the Qwen2.5-Omni format. It cuts the stream into one-second multimodal units that pair dense audio with sparse video frames, and it uses a chunked version of TMRoPE to keep a shared timeline. A small "speak head" next to the LM head decides when to respond, so the timing decision is separate from text generation. The model is trained on a curated streaming dataset with a two-stage curriculum: first adapting to the streaming format, then learning proactive responsiveness. The authors also regroup existing benchmarks into one proactive-plus-reactive evaluation suite. Across 12 benchmarks, ROMA is state of the art on proactive tasks and competitive on reactive QA. This points toward practical real-time multimodal assistants.

Key points

  • Input design: each one-second unit wraps video tokens and audio tokens in special boundary tokens.
    • All video tokens in a unit share one temporal ID.
    • Audio tokens keep 40 ms temporal resolution.
    • Position IDs keep growing from unit to unit, which forms the chunked TMRoPE timeline.
  • Speak head: it is trained with a weighted BCE loss to handle the rarity of speaking moments. A positive weight of w_pos = 3 gave the most balanced results. Aggregating the last four layers beat using only the final layer (K=1) on temporal grounding and triggering.
  • Unified benchmark suite: proactive tasks (alert, narration) and reactive QA are drawn from sources such as StreamingBench, OVO-Bench, OmniMMI and OVBench. In the authors' comparison, no earlier benchmark covers all three abilities.
  • StreamingBench results: ROMA beats VideoLLM-Online, Flash-VStream and Dispider in most categories, for example 76.96 vs 74.92 (Dispider) on OP.
  • Limitations: the model is sensitive to signal degradation and audio–video desynchronization, and very long (hour-scale) dependencies are limited by context length.
