MMLU-ProX: A Multilingual Benchmark for Advanced Large Language Model Evaluation
Paper · 2025 · Weihao Xuan, Rui Yang, Heli Qi et al.
Summary
Evaluating LLMs across languages has two gaps. Demanding reasoning benchmarks such as MMLU-Pro exist mainly in English. Multilingual suites like Global-MMLU combine translation sources of uneven quality and pose easier questions. The authors address both with MMLU-ProX, which carries the ten-option, reasoning-heavy MMLU-Pro into 29 typologically varied languages, Ukrainian among them. Every language has the same question set, so scores can be compared directly.
The source data was first cleaned by removing or merging duplicates and fixing grammar and formatting. Several strong LLMs then translated it in an agent-style loop of drafting, self-reflection and refinement, with checking by an external model and spot reviews by human experts.
Testing 36 recent LLMs with zero-shot and 5-shot chain-of-thought prompting showed strong results in well-resourced languages. Accuracy fell sharply for low-resource languages, most of all African ones such as Wolof, Yoruba and Zulu. The benchmark offers a controlled tool for measuring, and eventually narrowing, cross-lingual gaps in model reasoning.
Key points
- Size: The full version has 11,829 parallel questions per language across 14 disciplines. MMLU-ProX-Lite has 658 per language. In both, 70 questions are reserved for few-shot prompts, leaving 11,759 and 588 for scoring.
- Lite reliability: Lite and full results differ by only 1.14% on average, and model rankings stay nearly the same. DeepSeek-R1, GPT-4.1 and DeepSeek-V3 lead, while Phi4-14b trails.
- Models evaluated: The 36 models include open-source LLMs from 3.8B to 671B parameters plus proprietary ones, including reasoning-enhanced and multilingual-optimized variants.
- Prompting effects: 5-shot prompting helps low-resource African languages much more than English, where GPT-4.1 gained 3.7%. Models running in reasoning ("thinking") mode, like Qwen3-30B, change little between the two prompting styles.
- Quality control: Over 30 experts spent more than 400 hours on review. Sampled translations averaged above 4 on a 5-point Likert scale for accuracy, fluency and completeness. Not every language was fully expert-checked.
