MMRA: A Benchmark for Evaluating Multi-Granularity and Multi-Image Relational Association Capabilities in Large Visual Language Models

Paper · 2026 · Siwei Wu, King Zhu, Yu Bai et al.

Summary

Existing multimodal benchmarks mostly test facts within a single image. Earlier multi-image suites such as MuirBench and MIRB ask factual questions and do not probe the commonsense links between pictures or whether a model tracks their order. The authors introduce a multi-image relation association task and MMRA, a hand-curated benchmark of 1,024 samples. Its relation taxonomy is derived largely from ConceptNet relations (e.g., AtLocation, MadeOf, UsedFor), plus some purely visual categories. It has 11 subtasks split between entity-level and image-level granularity. Models are tested under four input regimes: images plus question (IQ), generated descriptions plus question (DQ), both combined (IDQ), and question alone (QO). Closed models, led by GPT-4o, perform best. Entity-level and spatial subtasks are hardest. Text descriptions help LLMs considerably, which suggests that LVLMs fail to fully exploit fine-grained visual detail. Most open LVLMs handle reversed image order poorly, but a small fine-tuning set fixes much of this. This points to a gap in pre-training and gives a diagnostic tool for multi-image reasoning.

Key points

  • Benchmark structure: MMRA has 1,024 samples covering 11 subtasks.

    • Entity level (6): RelativePosition, NearSameEntity, MentalitySimilarity, AppearanceSimilarity, SimilarMaterial, UsageSimilarity.
    • Image level (5): includes Environment, Layout, ObservationAngle, SimilarEvent, SubEvent.
  • Image pair selection: Candidate pairs come from LLaVA-665k-multi plus web-crawled images. Pairs were filtered by Sentence-BERT caption similarity with a 0.5 threshold, yielding 3,403 pairs for annotation.

  • Model comparison: GPT-4o reaches the best overall score, and closed models (GPT-4o, GPT-4v, Gemini) beat open ones. In the DQ setting, the text-only Qwen2-72B-Chat outperforms Gemini-Flash.

  • Order-reversal test: Reversing image order on the RP, SM, NSE and OA subtasks yields these overall scores:

    ModelOverall
    Idefics254.12
    Phi3v36.85
    Mantis25.22
    Qwen-VL17.35
  • Fine-tuning fix: The authors annotated 1,500 training samples and paired each with a reversed-order counterpart. Fine-tuning Qwen-VL on this data lifts its order-perception score from 17.35 to 61.01. Code and data are available at github.com/Wusiwei0410/MMRA.
