Ugaritic Parallel of Jahwe melek ʿōlām
Summary
Woźniak traces the origin of the Old Testament title of God as eternal king, Jahwe melek ʿōlām, which appears in Ps 10:16, Ps 29:10 and Jer 10:10. He proposes that its forerunner is the Ugaritic phrase rpʾu mlk ʿlm. This phrase is attested on tablet 24.252, which was excavated at Ras Shamra in 1961 and published by Ch. Virolleaud in Ugaritica V (1968). The comparison only holds if rpʾu refers to a deity. To test that condition, the author reviews earlier scholarship by Gordon, Parker, Cross, Virolleaud and especially J. C. de Moor, who treats Rapiʾu as a form of Baʿlu. De Moor also points to personal names in which the element rpʾ stands where bʿl stands in parallel names. Woźniak concludes that the biblical title has an Ugaritic prehistory but was reshaped in two ways. In context, the Ugaritic phrase names a god who feasts alongside other gods. In meaning, it names one god among many, whereas the Hebrew title names a single God who rules over all nations. The note is a compact case study of how a religious formula is borrowed and then reinterpreted.
Key points
- The Hebrew formula occurs three times (Ps 10:16; 29:10; Jer 10:10). The related eternal-king motif also appears in Ps 24, 45, 145 and 146, Exod 15:18 and 1 Kings 1:31.
- On tablet 24.252, rpʾu mlk ʿlm appears once on the recto (line 1) and on the verso in lines 6–7.
- Scholars interpret rpʾu in different ways:
- Gordon reads it as a deity, the Rephaim, or an epithet of Dnil.
- Parker (UF 4, 1972) sees it as a theophoric element in divine names.
- Cross glosses it roughly as "the hale one."
- Virolleaud identifies it as the father of the gods.
- De Moor (ZAW 88, 1976) offers six arguments:
- Rapiʾu is the national god and the king's protector.
- The title renders Babylonian šarru dāru.
- Rapiʾu is invited first to drink wine at the New Year feast.
- Rapiʾu is identical with Baʿlu, or a manifestation of him.
- King Daniʾilu is called mt rpʾu in the Aqhatu legend.
- rpʾ names pattern like bʿl names, for example bʿly/bʿlyn alongside rpiʾy/rpiʾyn.
- The extracted header prints the year 1979 (tome XX), which differs from the 2026 date given in the citation.
Interesting ideas
- I1. The author states the parallel as conditional: it holds only if rpʾu denotes a god, and he then gathers evidence for that condition rather than assuming it. This keeps a hidden premise visible and checkable. — For Mova (world): Each inferred equivalence (for example, that two mentions denote one entity) could carry its stated precondition as a node, so explanations show which premise the conclusion rests on.
- I2. Identity is argued from substitution in names: rpʾ occupies the same slot as bʿl in otherwise matching personal-name patterns, which suggests the two refer to the same god. Paired slot-filling like this is evidence based on structure rather than co-occurrence counts. — For Mova (frames): Coreference could be supported when two expressions fill the same argument slot of parallel frames across sentences, giving a traceable reason instead of a similarity score.
- I3. When a phrase is carried from one tradition to another, the author keeps "difference in context" (who uses it, in what setting) separate from "difference in meaning" (what it denotes). The same words can keep their form while their referent and scope change. — For Mova (back): In translation through the meta-world, the system could check separately that both the situational frame and the denotation survive, and flag cases where only the surface form was preserved.
- I4. The author attributes each reading to a named scholar and compares the readings, rather than merging them into one consensus gloss. Keeping alternatives with their sources makes disagreement easy to inspect. — For Mova (learn): Silver labels from several witness parsers could be stored with per-witness attribution, so a disputed arc shows who proposed which analysis before agreement is computed.
