From Hair to Heel: Ugaritic Terms for Parts of the Body
Summary
Watson compiles a full inventory of the anatomical vocabulary found in Ugaritic alphabetic texts. Earlier surveys left gaps, and SED I omitted many items, probably because they are not Common Semitic. Human body parts are listed first, arranged from head to foot, which is the traditional ordering also seen in Hebrew and Hittite. Animal parts follow, and a separate section covers multi-word anatomical expressions. Each entry gives its gender, meaning, KTU text references and any syllabic spellings. It then lists cognates across Semitic languages with dictionary references and, where possible, parallels in Afro-Asiatic (Egyptian, Chadic, Cushitic, Omotic, Berber) and Indo-European. A summary table and a survey of how terms are distributed across text genres complete the study. The main finding is that Ugaritic body-part words are overwhelmingly inherited. Borrowing mostly runs outward from Semitic, with only a handful of imports. Ugaritic also has an unusually large set of compound anatomical terms. The survey is a reference tool for comparative Semitics and for studying semantic fields.
Key points
- Over twenty discussed words are absent from SED I, for example mḫlpt, pslt, rqt, lṣb, qmm, ṭmṯ, tmn and tmnt.
- The divination (šumma izbu) text KTU 1.103+1.145 holds the densest cluster of anatomical terms, 27 in total. Only lb, pʕn, pnm and yd occur in every genre.
- Proposed loans into Ugaritic:
- from Akkadian: ủrt, dn, mhr, ššrt
- from Hittite: ảnš, ỉtl
- from Egyptian: ủṣbʕ, ggn, ḥms, ymn
- Semitic yd and kp passed into Egyptian and, indirectly, into Greek. Greek letter names such as rho, pei and iota also go back to Semitic body words.
- Spelling variation is limited:
- "breast" has three forms (dd, td, zd)
- "seed" and "ankle" each have two forms
- four nouns take an optional final -t (ḏnb/ḏnbt, mtn/mtnt, šʕr/šʕrt, tmn/tmnt)
- there are more than a dozen composite terms
Interesting ideas
- I1. The lexicon is organized as a spatial partonomy (top to bottom, human before animal), not alphabetically, so related parts sit next to each other and gaps become visible. — For Mova (world): Body-part entries in the ontology could carry explicit part-of links and a vertical ordering, letting the world model reason about "above/below" or "part of the arm" questions.
- I2. Every entry records how strong its evidence is: firmly attested words are separated from those whose sense comes only from context, as with ʕq "pupil". — For Mova (world): Compiled lexical facts could store a confidence tag with their source, so explanations can say when a meaning was inferred rather than looked up.
- I3. Variant spellings and optional suffixes are grouped under one lexeme rather than treated as separate words. — For Mova (tokens): The lemmatizer could keep explicit variant tables (spelling variants, optional affixes) that map several surface forms to one lemma, with the variant type kept for explainability.
- I4. Tracking which genres each term appears in shows that vocabulary clusters in particular text types, such as omen texts or economic lists. — For Mova (learn): Evaluation sets could be split by genre to catch vocabulary that only shows up in one text type, using the other genres as a control.
- I5. Multi-word anatomical expressions are treated as their own lexical class rather than being broken into parts. — For Mova (tree): Fixed compound noun phrases for body parts could be recognized as single units before frame building, so they map to one concept instead of a head noun plus modifier.
