Application of the Online-Based Titis Method in Learning Arabic Grammar from the SDGs Perspective

Summary

This qualitative case study examines how an Indonesian institute, the Al Hafizh Indonesian Qur'an Language Institute, teaches classical Arabic grammar (nahwu, morphology/shorof) online using the Titis ("drip") method. The method was designed for adult learners who missed traditional pesantren schooling and now face constraints of time, money and distance. The authors joined the course themselves and gathered evidence through interviews, observation and documents, then checked it by triangulation. Instruction runs on Zoom, WhatsApp, YouTube and Instagram and follows a compact 20-hour module. The course has three phases: planning (objectives, schedule, tools), delivery (opening, teacher explanation, discussion, homework) and ongoing assessment through exercises, assignments and a final exam. The authors conclude that the method transfers well to online delivery and frame it as a contribution to SDG 4 (Quality Education). The paper reports no quantitative learning outcomes, and it contains no NLP or computational component. Its value to us is mainly as a model of curriculum and evaluation design.

Key points

  • The setting is a free online nahwu/shorof course; the authors cite more than 44,000 registrants.
  • The study population was 35 participants who attended Zoom sessions consistently. About 30% were sampled at random (roughly 10 people).
  • The main teaching material is a 20-hour package covering nahwu and shorof according to the drip (Titis) method, presented through PowerPoint slides.
  • The method is descriptive qualitative, using interviews, observation and documentation. Analysis moved through collection, presentation, verification and conclusion, with triangulation for validity.
  • The institute runs advanced classes for graduates and encourages some of them to become Titis instructors.

Interesting ideas

  • I1. The authors accept a finding only when interviews, observation and documents all point the same way, which guards against bias from any single source. — For Mova (learn): This matches our witness-parser agreement for silver data, and we could log which independent "source" supports each accepted label so disagreements stay explainable.
  • I2. Instead of the exhaustive classical grammar (a 2757-stanza didactic poem), the course compresses essentials into a fixed 20-hour core, giving learners a usable minimum quickly. — For Mova (answer): Student readers could be trained first on a small, fixed core of constructions needed for school tests, with rarer phenomena added afterwards.
  • I3. The paper contrasts learning "about language" with learning language, teaching grammar inside meaningful situations rather than as isolated rules. — For Mova (frames): Parser and frame quality could be judged by whether the analysis supports correct who-did-what-to-whom readings in real passages, not only by rule-level correctness.
  • I4. Exercises, assignments and the final exam serve as feedback that drives further improvement, not merely as a grade. — For Mova (learn): Periodic evaluation runs could directly seed self-induced repair rules, turning each checkpoint's errors into the next training signal.
  • I5. Graduates are channelled into advanced classes and then into teaching the method, so each cohort produces the next cohort's teachers. — For Mova (learn): A student model that passes a tier could become a teacher or witness for the next, cheaper tier, reducing reliance on the top LLM teacher.
