HowToNarrate: A General-Domain Benchmark for Synchronized Video Narration with External Knowledge
Paper · 2026 · Xueyan Wang, Dingyi Yang and Qin Jin
Summary
HowToNarrate tackles Synchronized Video Narration. In this task, a model writes voiceover text for consecutive video clips. The text must stay grounded in the visuals, add useful background knowledge, fit each clip's duration, and follow on logically from earlier narration. Earlier datasets either ignored knowledge and length control or covered only narrow domains such as advertising.
The authors collected 3,214 narrated YouTube videos from sources like BBC Earth and WikiHow and split them into 37,522 clips. They transcribed the speech with ASR, cleaned it with DeepSeek-V2.5, and had humans verify it. They also built a knowledge base per video by pulling facts from the human narrations and expanding them with an LLM.
Benchmarking current MLLMs exposed three problems: repetitive knowledge use, weak use of prior narration, and confusion between context and external knowledge. To address these, the authors propose VideoNarrationAgent, which has three agents for context compression, knowledge retrieval, and generation. Both the agent framework and instruction tuning on the dataset bring clear gains. The resource matters for documentary, educational and instructional voiceover generation.
Key points
- Dataset scale: 3,214 videos, 37,522 clips and 156.2 hours across seven domains, including tutorial, cooking, travel and documentary. Videos average about 3 minutes and 12 clips, and the knowledge base averages about 224 words per video.
- ASR cleanup and annotation quality: DeepSeek-V2.5 refinement lowered the sentence-level ASR error rate from 15.3% to 6.7%. Inter-annotator agreement reached a Pearson correlation of 0.62.
- Evaluation dimensions: visual relevance (EMScore), knowledge relevance and richness, word count accuracy (Hit), fluency (Repetition-4), and coherence.
- Weak use of context: the tested MLLMs give less than 10% of their attention to previous narrations.
- Gains from the proposed methods:
- Instruction tuning raised Qwen2.5-VL's score from 25 to 84.
- With VideoNarrationAgent, Gemini-2.0-Flash improved its Hit score from 48.04 to 74.62 and reduced Repetition-4 from 20.93 to 5.76.
