FABLE: Fine-grained Fact Anchoring for Unstructured Model Editing
Paper · 2026 · Peng Wang, Biyu Zhou, Xuehai Tang et al.
Summary
Current unstructured model editing methods, such as UnKE and AnyEdit, can make an LLM reproduce an edited passage in full. However, they often fail when asked about a single detail inside that passage. The authors argue this happens because these methods mainly learn a mapping from question to surface text, so the atomic facts never reach the lower layers where knowledge is stored.
They propose FABLE, which splits the key generator of a Transformer into two parts:
- Stage one: shallow layers learn individual facts from synthesized fine-grained question–answer pairs.
- Stage two: a small, constrained update to deeper layers restores fluent, coherent output of the whole text.
To measure this ability, they build UnFine, a benchmark that extends existing editing datasets with fine-grained QA pairs, extracted key phrases and fact-level metrics.
On Llama3-8B-Instruct and Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, FABLE clearly improves fine-grained question answering. It keeps state-of-the-art holistic editing quality and preserves the models' general capabilities best. This matters because real tasks usually need targeted facts, not verbatim recall.
Key points
- UnFine benchmark: it has three subsets built on existing datasets: UnFine-UnKE (from UnKEBench), UnFine-CF (from AKEW (CounterFact)) and UnFine-MQ (from AKEW (MQuAKE)).
- The authors added fine-grained QA pairs to the two AKEW sets.
- They extracted key knowledge phrases for all three subsets.
- Metrics: holistic quality is scored with ROUGE-L and BERT-Score. Two new fact-level metrics are added:
- Hit Rate (HR): exact matching of all key phrases.
- C_LCS: longest-common-subsequence coverage of the gold answer.
- Ablation on Llama3-8B-Instruct:
- Editing layers 4–6 in the fine-grained stage gives the best balance.
- Using about 5× fine-grained pairs per sample works best; 10× lowers ROUGE-L to 92.23.
- Removing either stage hurts performance.
- Efficiency: with stage one in place, stage two converges in about 10 steps instead of about 15.
- Data augmentation check: giving UnKE or AnyEdit the same extra QA pairs lowers their holistic performance. This suggests the gains come from FABLE's method, not just the extra data.
- General capabilities: these were tested on MMLU plus five more datasets. Code is available at github.com/caskcsg/FABLE.
